Does anyone have any feedback on the performance and setbacks with the coil over package. Just wondering if it was worth the extra $350.

Next weekend (3/2) I will be attending a pre-season Test-n-Tune event where I'll get lots of seat time. There will be a skidpad, a slalom coarse and 60sec auto-x coarse. I have skidpad data from my old setup (konis & SS linears) to compare. I have high expectations of improved performance based on the around town driving I've done this past week. I will post my results - it should be interesting.

For me, the most important improvements are:
Almost no nose dive under hard braking.
Almost no body roll under cornering.
The ability to drop the rear substancially.
The ability to set corner weights for optimum balance.

I have the ride height set to 4" at the front rocker panel and 4.5" at the rear rocker. The corner weights are set so the diagonals are equal with my 200lb butt in the seat. The Konis are set nearly full hard, but I will experiment with shock settings on the slalom coarse.

The down side is what some would consider a bone-jarring ride (the CD player skips often). But then, I also have solid frame mounts and poly bushings everywhere. For me, it's a track car first and a street car second. I should also point out that you can get whatever spring rate you want. I went pretty stiff - 700lb/in front & 400lb/in rear. As I recall the stock spring rates are around 220 front and 160 rear.

If you're serious about handling, coilovers are the way to go. :D

Ive got pictures of the coilover itself, and side by side comparisons of two cars. One stock, one with coilovers on the street. (pictures)

Thrillsho, your spring rates are much higher for the purpose and the intended ride height. I would normally send 600lb front and 300lb rear to anyone else.

The spring rates also depend on how low you intend to set the ride height. the springs are MUCH smaller than the OEM type and compress differently. this is why the huge OEM spring is 200lbs and the 2.5" diameter 6" long coil over spring has to be 600 lbs or so. with the normal set up I would send out the ride wouldn't be so harsh.

Eric has both driven and ridden in my car ask him I have the 600 front 300 rear

blackhawk:: i will probably be selling my setup within the next week or two. if no one buys them off the forum within a couple days of posting then they will go on ebay. everything is brand new, in the boxes. it was taken out for inspection and thats it. the reason i am selling everything is because i have a new play toy and i want a vortec by the time the track opens. i don't wanna be getting pushed around by the lightnings up there wink

My CD tends to skip now(on bumpy roads) so I guess going 700lb/fr and 400lb/rr would really change my ride. But would I be able to adjust them later? To a lower rate?

eiden, i think there are two ways to change the rate to a lower rate, either raise the car so the springs aren't as compressed (not sure if that would work, but it seems to be logical) or you could buy another set of springs with a different rate.

Toolman - I pulled a not very impressive .83g with Konis, SS Linears, Poly bushings everywhere 22mm front SB, 21mm rear SB, adjustable rear control arms, H-brace, front eccentric camber plates, and performance street tires. No SFCs, STBs or alum SFB. The car pushed badly because the front SB was bigger than the rear and the body roll was excessive because of the small SBs and relativly low spring rate. I had to run 3deg neg camber at all four corners to get the tire temps even across the face of the tires. I ran 1/8" toe-out in front & zero toe in back.
With the bigger SBs and higher spring rates, body roll is minimal so I expect to be able to run much less camber, say 1.5deg. 3deg worked well in the corners but I was sacrificing grip while accelerating and braking - 1.5deg will fix that.

Shawn - I wasn't trying to scare anyone away from coilovers or give a misconception of ride quality. Mine are perfect for my application - I couldn't be happier. That's the beauty of coilovers - you can select the ride height and spring rate you want for your application whether you want it slung low and riding smooth or ready for the track. :D

Shoboy - Raising or lowering the car doesn't alter the spring rate nor effect the amount the spring is compressed. To change the spring rate, you have to purchase another set of springs. The good news is, they are readily available and reasonably priced.

thrill:: it was just a guess on my part, as i can now see, it was wrong. not the first time and deff not the last.
SHO_POWER:: i replied to your email, i didn't check this thread for a couple days so i didn't know you were looking for me before, sorry. the set up is all brand new, in the boxes. the rear springs will have to be exchanged (i think shawn will just switch them out because they are still in the box, if not i will pay the fee that shawn charges to have to do the transfer) the rear springs were set up for my stereo which is 200-300 pounds, so the springs are taller and heavier springs. if you have a big stereo then you will be fine. the springs are on the stiffer side for the best performance. if anyone else is interested, email me privatly. thank you

Thrillsho-that is cool I didn't think that at all

but you can lower the car too much for a specific spring rate. the lower the car the stiffer the spring must be

my $.02. the coilovers are awsome, they are not too stiff, and the car runs beutifully on rough and smooth pavement. Shawn said to me when i was ordering my set(not a direct quote sorry shawn) "its a little bit rougher but when u hit that turn up ahead, you forget all about that little bit of roughness". and that is soooooo true. also if u are planning on buying the coilovers, DEFINANTLY get the Koni shocks. burn_out
