a guy I know has got a genI with a sloppy cable shifter. He says that Sometimes the shift is smooth and easy. Other times he has to shut the engine down and engage 1st, then restart. any ideas?

Or rod shifter upgrade......when I bought my 95, it acted that way.....but I think I'm the only one here who has actually had a clutch disk spring pack grenade......

Yes, a worn synchro could cause similar.....but the "sloppy" cable shifter is probably the real issue. Have your friend try going to 2nd or 3rd with the clutch pushed in then to 1st to see if it goes then.....that'd tell me it wasn't the linkage.

There are a number of issues that can cause an SHO to resist a smooth 1st gear shift. If the quill sleave isn't anchored it'll screw up 1st, synchro's, worn clutch, monkey wrench install...

Took three tries to get the clutch right on my 95.

It would be FAR easier just to repair the cable shifter, as installing a rod shifter is not a bolt on process. Mine is super tight, has no play at all and I like it better than a rod shifter. The rod shifter weighs 15 lbs more, is in the way underneath, and the exhaust needs to be bent, slightly less efficient flow than the stock straight through resonator used with the cable shifter.

The rod shifter weighs less than 15lbs TOTAL. and if he's ever had the dynomax system installed (the most common exhaust replacement) then he's set for a rod shifter upgrade.

I understand some people like and defend the cable shifter, and I'm cool with that. I'm just letting you know your car may already be prepared for the rod shifter. you can check by looking at the exhaust and seeing if the pipe by the shifter bends around that area or is a straight shot from the y-pipe to the rear of the car.

The only other thing you need is a way to cut the hole in the sheet metal where the larger rod shifter goes through the tunnel.
