There's a clunking coming from what seems like my transmission (93 ATX). I hear it when it's in drive, and it's consistent with the speed of the car. It's very loud from underneat the car, but not too loud from inside. It also leaks large amounts of fluid while it's moving, too. Are diff pins a problem in automatics, too? This is the first automatic SHO I've owned, so it's all new to me, haha. Aside from the leak and the clunk, it pulls great. Gear changes are good, and there's absolutely no slipping or other harshness. I've come to the conclusion that either:

a)the diff pin decided to take a vacation and left a wonderful hole up high right at the differential that leaks only when both wheels are turning

or

b) the vss sensor is leaking when I'm not watching it, and the knocking is in the half shaft.

Has anything like this ever happened to anybody before?

I took it out and about, and it was only clicking while it was in gear. So while I was moving, it stopped clicking/clunking while it was in neutral. It's a super stumper for me...

Chalk the rear wheels. Parking brake on. Jack the car up. Position 2 jack stands underneath the subframe. Have an assistant handy. Listen for the noises.

I did the test with each wheel up off of the ground, and I still got the noise. It's a bit louder from the passenger side. In a weird scenario, is there any way that he pan magnet could make contact with anything that moves? I did a google search, and I read a page where my symptoms kind of matched up to a final gear problem. I'm still stumped, though...

find the source of your leak, find the problem... could very well be diff pin ejection... wont be the first (i dont think you would still be driving though). other likely causes: depending where fluid is coming from of course, the half shaft could be not all the way in... you would get clunking/clicking from a bad/unlubricated CV joint.

i have also gotten a leak were the engine and transmission bolt together (the torque converter seal)... so if your bolts are hand tight, or non exsistant... look into that.

what ever you do, do not drive it low on fluid.

I've driven about 500+ miles on an ejected pin on a mocha 91 I had. I parked it because it was making some weird noise in first and third, but it still drove and shifted fine, haha. Yeah, I had considered the half shaft. But it clunks on both sides in the exact same way. I guess I'll just have to try it out sometime soon. Thanks for the help, you guys. Keep the suggestions coming!

So it makes the noise while the vehicle's moving in D. But when I go to neutral while the car's moving, the noise dissapears. So a recap:

A noise that increases with speed as the vehicle increases in speed.

Noise present in Drive and Reverse. But in reverse it's barely audible.

While vehicle's coasting in neutral, noise instantly disappears.

Does this help narrow it down?

Well, awesome. It's shred, now. Definitely was something internal. This is irritating. EVERYTIME I get a SHO, something happens to it almost immediately. I need an auto tranny and a place to work at, now. I hate these cars. I can do a 3.2 swap into a green 95 mtx I have (spun rod bearing), but I really like the white of the 93 auto, better. With the white rims, it's a SUPER white, haha. Any suggestions of what to do?
