When I bought my 1990 SHO (for $500) I was able to overlook the clicking/cracking sound coming from the drives side front suspension. It infrequently made this noise if I would take a sharp turn. Now, the noise is much more frequent. Every time I take a left turn (say from a stop sign) it clicks and cracks. Is the the CV joint? The struts? My brother feels certian that it's the CV. If it is this, how safe is it to dive 400 miles on it (all highway? I have to make the trip in november, so I need to know if it would be dangerous to drive with it like this. I'm not so much afraid of the car being stuck on the side of the road as I am the CV exploding @85-90 mph and spewing bearings all of the road. Any input on this would be great. Thanks!

If if clicks in rhythm with the rotational speed of the tire, it is likely the CV joint. You can replace the axle, CV joints and boots with a remanufactured unit for a minor expense.

It's not a rythmic clicking. It's only when I take a sharp turn (i.e. a left at a stop sign) or hit a bump. I have a spare CV joint, but I am not 100% sure that it's the CV b/c it doesn't click all the time. Any thoughts?

Joe didn't you say that there is grease all over the ripped boot
I don't think a bad wheel bearing would only make noise during a turn would it? That sounds like a CV especially since the boot is ripped. Joe that won't go out for at least 1000k miles. When you bring the car home for thanksgiving i'll put the new axle in it. Don't worry about it. The axle didn't blow on the Subaru and it was clicking for a long time before i replaced it. No burnouts=axle bringing you home. thumb

I haven't actually looked at the boot yet. I'm too busy w/ other s***. If you say It'll last 1000 miles I trust you. Too bad I laid the hugest patch the other day...jk lol I'll lay off the reverse doughnuts too. I start work Thurs. so I should have the money for the rod shifter and the mufflers/Y-pipe by the time I get back. Also, how long do you see the rod shifter install taking? Just wondering.

The hardest part of installing a rod shifter is cutting the place where it goes. I think 4-5 hours.

We'll have to devote a day to it then. I want to to get installed before I go back to school. You can just show me what to do and I'll get to it. Also, how much do you think joe wants for his mufflers? I'd like to install the catless and the mufflers during the same day if possible. I can't stand the rattling much longer. I should have at least 200 for when I come back, so money shouldn't be a real problem.

I wouldn't count on it to last any amount of time, especially if you don't know how long it's been like that.

Well, if you happen to be heading on Rt.17 east and see bearings then a red gen 1, you'll know that I'm gonna have a long walk back to CT! Hope it doesn't go, nothing I can really do about it now though.

Now, I seem to being having the same problem, but in the rear driver side. I had the wheel bearing/hub assembly replaced. Sound went away slightly. Now, it is worse than ever. Feels like that wheel will just roll right off. Not any vibration because of this. Stab link?
