Cleaning Intake?

I was wondering how hard is it to clean the Intake? Which areas of the intake get the dirtiest? Not sure if you have to take the whole top part of the Intake off or if just certain parts of the Intake have to come off.

i think the best way to clean the intake involves it's removal. and be sure to clean out the throttle body air bypass when your at it, those things get clogged and can cause idle problems.

With the amount of cleaner you are going to be spraying into the runners, the manifold should be removed from the engine. You do not want that much solvent and crud getting injested into the cylinders.

Take it off and disassemble it and take the pieces to the car wash. A few dollars with the wand should clean all the crap out. Just be sure to take any electrical stuff off so they don't get wet.

yeah, it is best to dissasemble....you not only protect the engine as sdpatt said but you can get at all the places better if it's in pieces.

You can do it a couple ways.

If I were you, the first thing I'd do is get a couple cans of Berryman's B12 aerosol carb cleaner and decarbon the motor by holding it at 3000 RPM and spraying the cleaner into the port near the IAC valve. It also serves to clean out the manifold really well because you're getting the solvent in there with the manifold nice and hot from driving.

Otherwise you can do what I did when I bought the car - disassemble the whole thing and attack it with a bucket o'carb cleaner and a stiff brush. I did the ports too while I was in there, and removed a lot of crud from them.

Oh...have fun! Take the thing off or do like I did and buy another one. I'm cleaning mine up a little each weekend and by the time spring rolls around I'll have a perfectly spotless intake to switch out.

As for what get's more dirty?? Let me tell ya, you haven't seen dirty until you see the inside of it. The outer crud cleans off with a little elbow grease and a toothbrush, but the inside I found that B-12 works great. When it starts to sparkle inside and out you'll feel great...just imagine what your car will feel like when you put it back on.

I have been cleaning the intake off the 3.2L engine the past few evenings. I can't believe the amount of crud inside there. The EGR ports were plugged solid. Four can of Berryman B12 aerosol and it's a lot better, not prefect and shiny, but good enough to feel comfortable about selling it on eBay. Anyways after 4 cans of Berrymans, the fumes were starting to fry what's left of my brain. Use this stuff in a WELL ventilated area.

I really feel bad for you guys with the ATX's and Calif. MTX's, that EGR system must be a real PITA to deal with.
