Hello everyone,

1994 Taurus SHO MTX 140,000mi

My new neighbor ran into my DD 94 MTX the other day. He did the right thing and admitted fault to the insurance co, so all is well there. The downside is, I got a cash estimate, and with the body shop being conservative trying to avoid a total loss it's $2600, which is just shy of 100% of the value of the car.

Would love to see the car live on, but my time and space is limited at the moment. Price will be dependent on what the ins co buyback terms are. Adjuster is out on Wednesday, so ball should be rolling pretty quickly after that.

Its exceptionally clean inside and out, with leather in great condition. It's had its regular 60k's, and just recently did a CPS and waterpump, due to the waterpump seal not taking on the last 60k. Just did a very light polish with meguairs 205, and seal with Klasse a week before the accident. Looking at the paint during this, I don't think its ever had any paint correction. The paint is mint.

Aftermarket mods limited to;
Sho shop catted Y-pipe
Aluminum radiator
Eibachs with Konis
LED taillights
Volvo V70R wheels (requires small spacer)

Feel free to pm me any questions

Let me get this straight. That driver side rear quarter panel is why they want to mark that car as totaled?

I would be able to easily find a body shop to fix it for way cheaper than that. I would say fight it and have them fix it. The car is worth fixing especially for that minor repair. (IMO)

They might have called it totaled just b/c they don't want to deal with it. My insurance almost totaled my 94 for some small dents above the windshield left from a hood letting go at 75 mph.

It's definitely worth fixing it, looks sharp. :thumb: Not many opal frost MTX's made. Not many left in that clean of condition either. Possibly fewer than the 94 moonlight blue MTX's.

Unfortunately labor in SF is $100/hr+. The wheelhouse is wrinkled, so the outer needs to come off or be sectioned to straighten the inner first. Then paint, which could probably get away with just painting the door and quarter. But to really get it to match, you'd have to blend the front door, and the bumper, rocker, and side panels.

If I could get away from work right now I would already have this thing ready for paint, and pocket the difference. Couple that with the fact I just completed an 92x to Sti swap, and another engine swap using my folk's garage, they're not exactly enthused about housing another 3 weekend project at their place. Not to mention their garage is still yellow from the last car we painted there almost 13 years ago.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Already have a couple ***, if all goes well this car should live on.

Knowing the industry, I'll confirm SF labor rates are outrageous. If you want to fix it your best shot is probably going down the list of the ins co's "approved" direct repair shops and asking them if they would be willing to repair it under their direct repair program and find a way to NOT total the car. It's entirely possible NONE of them will commit to that. Part of the problem is that the Bay Area body business is ruled by a few heavy hitters (Cooks Collision, Mike Rose, etc.) ... not that these places are bad, but they're more easily able to collude to "adjust" market rates.

In any event, good luck. It's a beautiful car and I hope it lives on. It's tempting enough somebody will surely bite on it.
