I'm new to using forums, so I apologize for this but I need help from some of you experts. I'm racing a 93 atx on dirt oval. I ran the stock size tires and wheels(215 60 r16) on a 1/8 mile high bank track. I run in low and the gearing is perfect, but when i go to a 1/4 mile flat track is when I have an issue. If I run low I hit the rev limiter coming out of the corner. So I have been running in second using 185 60 r14 tires, but I still don't have enough rpms. I leave the corner at 2500 and enter around 6000 tops. I should also add that i can not get any taller than stock tires or it will rub on shock. I race with another sho who has a 3.2mtx , and his second gear is perfect size.

My first idea is to do a mtx swap but from what ive read it's almost impossible to do without a donor car. I cant find a donor for a decent price in iowa.

My second idea would be to alter the atx. I've read that you can change gears with a windstar but I don't know if the gear ratios are any better. I dont know if it's possible to change one gear in the trans.

My last idea was to add hp and hope it gets up to speed quicker. But I don't know how much it would take, or how much money it would take to get there.

If anyone has any input it would be appreciated, either new ideas or ways to make my idea happen. I'm sure I forgot something, so if you have any questions just let me know. Thanks for helping me out.

How many more rpms would you need? If it's not too many you could just raise the rev limiter. I am not sure how the atx would react to the higher rpms. The MTX is fine with it, just stops making power as you get above the 7200rpm limiter. I know the atx cams are made for more torque at lower rpms and don't breth quite as well up top. You could swap in some MTX cams if you spend a lot of time at high rpms. Or go aftermarket. I have tri-flows in mine and it keeps pulling well above 7000rpms. If usually shift between 7500-7800rpms, but have hit my 8200rpm rev limiter on straights when I didn't want to upshift and then immediately downshift. An under-drive pulley of some kind would help save your accessories.

I need around 1000 rpm, I would like to be into the powerband leaving the corner. I'm at 2500 now. The rev limiter is not the issue, cause i cant get that high.

Okay, I misunderstood. When you said you were hitting the rev limiter in low I thought you wanted to get more rpm out of low. You are looking for steeper gears so you can run in 2nd, exit the corner at a higher rpm and be at about 7k rpms when you enter the next corner, correct?

Not sure how to help with that......you could pick up a MTX with a toasted motor cheap and swap in your 3.2. Pretty easy swap and you would have the mtx gearing.
