my check engine light comes on every time that i accelerate quickly. is that a minor problem, no problem, or major problem? does anyone know a reason that it would do that?

Every time the CEL comes on, there is a problem. How serious the problem is another matter.
The only sure way to know is to pull the codes. You can do this with a code reader or by using the method shown at www.shotimes.com.
As a guess, I'd say O2 sensor(s). My 93 did that as well.

when i get the code from the reader it flashes 33 and that is the only code that it registers

33 ALL - (O, M) EGR did not open/respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittently
The source of this code is that there was not a pressure change detected by the EGR pressure sensor (rectangular metal box mounted on the driver side rear of the intake plenum). In other words, the EGR passage is plugged.
First check the vacuum line connected to the intake below the EGR sensor and the line connected to the EGR valve mounted just to the driver side of the sensor. If these are in place, the EGR ports are most likely plugged.
Loosen the 8mm nut on the hose clamp at the throttle body (TB), unclip the two clips at the front of the air filter box and remove the filter box lid and intake hose. Now unclip the cruise control cable, rotate the throttle fully open and unhook the throttle cable. Remove the two 12mm nuts and two 12mm bolts that hold the TB to the intake manifold.
Looking inside the intake, you will see two 1/4" diameter holes at the fork in the intake tubing that resemble nostrils. Use a coat hanger or similar device to make sure the passages are clear. There is an 8mm Allen plug on the rear face of the intake by the EGR valve's attachment point. You can remove that and use a section of tubing to blow through the EGR passage to ensure it is clear.

Yes, if you actually got a number 33 error code. Code 33 says that either the EGR valve is not opening or the EGR passage in the intake manifold is plugged.
