I took my '95 SHO (3litre 5 speed)to a transmission shop for a new clutch. They did an excellent job, but when I picked the car up I lost battery power within a day.

When I took the car in for service, there was a seperate small wire connected to the positive battery terminal along with the usual large cable. When I got it back, this wire was missing. I had a problem several months before with battery power failing and I tightened this wire to the positive post. Problem solved.

The schematic drawing I have shows this wire running to the engine compartment fuse box

The tranny shop first said that this wire did not exist and now claim that the lack of this wire would not cause the battery to discharge and I need a new alternator.

Can anyone advise if this is so and if not, exactly where it connects on the engine fuse box? Is that the power distribution box on the top right of the firewall? Any help will be really appreciated!!

Cheers!

Thanks Paul,

My problem is that I can't read wiring diagrams. The plans clearly show the presence of this wire and the tranny shop now admits that it existed but that it had no effect on my battery getting and holding a charge. They tell me that I will need a new alternator and probably a voltage regulator and new battery. I can't accept this since the charging problem did not exist when this wire was present and fastened securely...before they did the clutch. Can you (or anyone) tell me the purpose of this wire and if it's absence would cause this non-charging problem. It would give me some ammunition when dealing with them. Thanks so much!!

The alternator output wire is connected to the under hood fuse box post. If there was one on the battery or if it was moved to the battery it was done in the past by someone.

Look to see if there is one on the fuse box. Or look at the large single wire that is coming out of the alternator and track it down as to where it goes.
