When I pull the plug is the fluid supposed to come out on its own? Cause mine did! Also how do we go about putting more back in, and how much does it hold??

I put fluid back in, but the same thing happened, fluid is coming back out without me even sucking it out. So tonight I have made ZERO progress, and have just made a HUGE gear oil puddle on the shop floor. What am I doing wrong?!? Can someone help me out? The car is a 2010 with the Performance Package. Build date is 11/09.

I'm not expert on the PTU but I think I read somewhere that if there's excessive fluid in it then it might have leaked in from the transmission. Make sure you check it out completely.

Also, are you filling the PTU while the car is level? I know it sounds basic but I've had a buddy try to fill his transmission while one side was on a jack stand.

So what are you saying by that? That it was overfilled? Also, I bought the car used last year in November. I guess it must have been changed at one point, because the fluid was mucky as some people say it is if it has never been changed. The old fluid was still nice and oily like it should have been.

What year is your SHO and is it a PP? If a PP, did you remove the drain plug? The fill plug on the PP has the temp sensor in its place.

Hrmm. I think only the 2013+ have the temp sensor and drain plug

If the car was level and you removed the plug on the side of the PTU and a LOT of lubricant came gushing out, it was too full. I would be a little concerned that transmission fluid had been getting in the PTU. When I changed mine the first time, a few drops came out - maybe as much as a teaspoon full or so. If yours was really too full, I am surprised it didn't spew some out of the vent.

If it were mine, I would suck out all I could and then pump in new lubricant until it STARTS to drip out the hole. I would then drive it awhile and check it again. I would also check the transmission level right away.

Again, the car needs to be LEVEL when removing and filling the PTU. If you check the transmission level, be sure the transmission is at full operating temperature, the car is running and in drive. Prior to checking, you should alternate slowly between drive and reverse. Then put in park and check. You will need to remove the airbox to check it.

The 2010 only has one hole for filling and drain about halfway up the case. There isn't a drain plug per say.

Okay so you pulled the plug and fluid came out...It could have been overfilled by someone with the car at an angle previously OR you could have a bad seal between the trans and the PTU and transmission fluid is being forced into the PTU. I recommend you check your transmission fluid level. As someone mentioned there was a TSB for it during the early years. The fluid level should be even with the bottom of the fill plug.

So I have to ask since you said it was coming back out the hole - Did you actually pump out all of the fluid through the hole with a hand pump and hose that reaches down in to the bottom of the PTU? It isn't fun but you have to pump the old stuff out THEN pump new stuff back in through the hole until it just starts coming out of the hole...then you are done (assuming the car is level). Just put the plug back in and call it good.

Yes, I pumped all of the old oil out with a hand-held oil extractor pump. I'm going to check transmission fluid level and try to make the car a little more level tonight. How deep should the hose go down in?? My hose only went in prolly 4"....

How much were you able to pump out? It only holds 18 ounces. About 12 is all I have ever been able to suck out. I think the hose I use hits a gear and fails to get to the absolute bottom of the PTU no matter how much wiggling around of the hose I do. Maybe others have gotten more out than I have......

That's probably about right assuming the tube went "down" in to the PTU...it wasn't easy to do for me. How much fluid did you pump out?

Yes, 8-10 ounces is pretty typical, especially the first time. The last time I did mine, I used a piece of copper tubing bent in sort of an "L" shape to stick into the ptu. I attached a flexible hose to the copper tubing. That worked better for me.
