If you don't change the fluid in it, would that cause it to whine and the pump breakdown prematurely?

Newsflash....

Power Steering Fluid is uncolored ATF and ATF is colored hydraulic fluid.

They are ALL hydraulic fluids with different additives, detergents and friction modifiers.

Just flushed mine.
Grab a 3/8th clear tube about 6 foot.
Grab a gallon or two of Type F ATF. I used Castrol. Also get some Lucas PS fluid.
Get a 3/8th double barb fitting I used plastic.
Pull the small return line from ps resevoir and have a plastic cup underneath to catch the run off. Then place a a few inches of tube there to keep it from leaking out and clamp it. I used vice grips. Now hook up the rest of the tubing to the double barb and the return line.
Use a funnel to pour the ATF into the resevoir. You'll need a friend to start the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth while you fill the reservoir. Be careful it goes quick. Once the fluid begins to turn red and not some nasty black color, shut the car off.
Hook all back up and fill with the rest of the ATF but leave room in the reservoir for about 12oz of the Lucas PS fluid. This will help with the whine and give you some time before replacing the ps pump. Good luck and be carefull. I'm not responsible for your F up.

Hi, what hose is the supply hose on the reservoir? Thanks!

There are TWO hoses at the overflow. The TOP one is the the return line. Disconnect from overflow, attach hose to extend it to a bucket. Have someone start the car and keep turning the wheel while you add fluid. Once the crap in the bucket starts coming out clean shit the car off. Reconnect the hose to the over flow and start the car again. Add fluid now until its full while still turning the wheel..

This isn't rocket science, its pretty simple.

As far as the fluid, it doesn't really matter.. As stated its all hydrolic fluid, and in the steering system it all acts the same. Keep the fluid clean and you wont have problems.

If you feel like money bags, throw mobil one atf in there, if not, use store brand ps fluid..

My bmw says atf on the cap, but it leaks the entire overflow in about a week and a half and atf is too expensive to just leak out, I've been running ps fluid for 15k and the steering is still fine and no noises.

Hey, you forgot to tell me to plug up the hole where the return hose usually goes, so all my new ATF fluid doesn't go anywhere! Jk. But really, thanks for the elaboration on the procedure. And I plan on flushing if with a gallon of reg. ATF, then finish it with about a quart or two of Type F. I'm just going to put in what the Service manual says. (HOWEVER, I have an orginal service manual for 1993 Taurus/Sable, and it says Type F OR "Premium" Power Steering fluid, so who knows. Lol)
