My 94 ATX is in dire need of upper 60k and the rear chain tensioner needing replaced. There has been a slight noise from the tensioner for a while but now there is now an very loud clacking sound comming from the rear bank valves between 1400 and 2000 rpm. Below 1400: very slight noise, above 2000 no noise at all. No performance issues and great oil pressure. from idle +. My questions are:

1. Will the tensioners from an 89 3.0 fit the 94 3.2.
2. Is the loud clacking between the rpm range of 1200 - 2000 caused by the tensioner relying on oil psi, or is it from the shims.
3. My wife only drives the car around town for short trips. Is this ok or should I just have her park it till I get the parts.

Any other advise would be great.

1. Yes, frt to frt & rear to rear only!
2. Prolly cause its not the shims, if its not rod bearings! You have absolutly ID'ed the noise coming from rear VC?
3. Do not drive the car!

Chain tensioners are VERY Important to the **** of the complete valve train on each head! Oil is pumped up into the CT(chain tensioner) from the bottom through a small hole. Oil fills CT & lifts & then sprays oil on the the valve train through another small hole at the top just below the pad. If CT is sticking it will reduce oil needed to **** valve train=(cam caps, cam lobes, shims, buckets & valve stem.) When removing CT & cleaning make SURE you put the pad post back in with the hole facing toward valve train!

Found the problem.

PS- get hold of Kurt & Mike at NWSHO. They will have what you need & the know how to do it right!

Well I took apart the front of the engine. After removing the upper timing belt cover I was able to move the belt up and down about 3/4 inch. This tells me that the tensioner has failed. My next question is can I get the hydrualic tensioner and pully the tensioner together? If so where? I have the Ford PN for the tensioner but would like to replace the pully as well while I am in there.

First post you were typing about the cam chain tensioners under the VC's. Now your typing about the front timing belt tensioner & pully. So is the issue upper or front or both? You may find NOS parts if you search. I'm not sure about after market ATX tensioners.
