Hey guys, this one problem keeps happening to my car and i was planning on fixing it.(Its a 93 ATX) When i step on the gas 3/4 of the way or more, i will get a intermittent check engine light until i turn the car off. I plugged in my scanner and got the continuous codes 172 and 336. So vacuum leak, or bad EGR valve/sensor, or both? AND one other quick question. I looked up on here how to remove the intake silencer. I was planning on doing that, it wont hurt anything right? I wont make it run bad? lol. Thanks So MUCH!!!

I had the same check engine light going on and off with an EGR code. Try cleaning those two small metal tubes that are below the DPFE sensor. I used pipe cleaners soaked in carb spray. Those tubes get clogged with carbon. There is a bigger channel below the intake that goes to the EGR valve, I tried cleaning that first with no change. You can do a search on "EGR" on tips to clean that lower tube.

Removing the intake silencer won't hurt the car, just makes the intake sound a little louder.

Yep, clean the EGR passages, and clean the MAF too while you're at it.

As far as the silencer goes, I removed the whole box from the inside of the fender, makes it a little louder, shouldn't hurt anything.

Run the codes again just to be safe. I keep getting a 157 without a CEL.

Well I'm checking back in. I had erased those two codes like a week ago and when I was driving today and had to step on it I got the check engine light again. Plugged it in and got the same two codes. What do u recommend what I do now? Thanks!

172 is an oxygen sensor, it won't go away until you replace it.

The 336 code is the DPFE valve (the square metal thing screwed to the back of the intake). Blocked EGR passages will cause a 332 code.
