My CEL light is coming on, then going off after a while, then coming on again... I took a trip to PA last week and while driving down there the drivers side muffler fell off.... so its a little loud and raspy... would this be causing the CEL . It never came on before the muffler fell off. Also, my oil light stays on most of the time, sometimes it doesent stay on when I start the car. The oil is well over the hatch marks. Is this why the oil light is on, or could it be the sender unit?? The car is a 92 MTX.

If your oil is over full I would take care of that first. Having too much oil is as bad as not having enough. As for your CEL light I doubt your muffler falling off is causing it to come on.

You have TWO oil lights, one yellow and one RED. Guess which one is the most important one.

Which is on?

As for the CEL, pull your codes. Instructions abound.

Good news Bill is that it's not the oil light of death. That oil light typically comes on when the oil level is low.

Have you pulled your codes yet? This will help you with your CEL

For the oil light, you probably need to replace the oil level sensor that is located on the back of the oil pan. About $50 from Ford. Or disconnect it.

My experience is that a CEL that comes and goes is due to bad o2 sensors, but (as was already suggested) you should pull the codes to confirm that. Both the red 94 and the white 94 had that CEL on for a while, but mostly off condition, and changing the o2 sensors made it all happy.
