I just installed a ss catless y pipe on my 93 mtx, and i was just wondering if its normal for the front tube to be resting on the subframe, also after i started it up it started smoking a good amount out of the exhaust.

Is this a used pipe(already welded) or did you get it new. I believe they all come unassembled so if the fit is slightly off it will be due to who put it together.

You no longer have cats on the car. You will see whatever is coming out of your engine will now be coming directly out of your exhaust. It you see smoke then your engine smokes for whatever reason.

Where did you get it from? If it's been sitting around collecting dust and grime, that's all going to be burning off for a few hours.

Also like Irish Pride said, your engine may have always smoked and now that the cats are gone you're seeing it. What color smoke is it?

I bought the pipe brand new and assembled it myself, and it is no longer smoking, i think there might have just been some residual inside the pipes.

When I did mine I fitted it together with exhaust clamps so I could shift the parts around until it didn't contact the subframe or oilpan. Then I tightened it down and welded it together.

Im just worried about being able to get it back down because there is basically no clearance in where the front manifold is, even with a universal joint and extensions, is there any tricks that anybody uses to remove the front side?

I just pulled the coolant overflow and reached down with a wrench the last time......the time before that I did from the bottom and snapped all the studs off. Obviously I am reaping the benifits of just putting stainless bolts, washers, and nuts back on instead of studs. lol

Thanks man ill definitely try it from the top the next time i go to pull off my y pipe. In your opinion does a catless increase or decrease fuel mileage going from the stock 90* y pipe?

I suspect that your going to be playing with it to get the feel for the catless pipe and burn more fuel. In the end it's likely not going to make a noticeable diff.

x2. In theory you should be able to get a little better MPG since the engine is now a more efficient air pump, but in reality it will be about the same.

IIRC, with mine I used a racketing combination wrench to put the difficult nut on the front. I just threaded it on to the point that it would be tight after I tightened the other side. Then used a ratchet on the other side. I haven't had an issue with the original studs on mine, but I usually apply anti-seize to them about once a year.
