Does it matter where a catalytic converter is placed on the ehxaust system? Does it have to be on the Y-Pipe for any specific reason or can it be placed further back in the exhaust system (Like say the mid pipe)? Thanks!

yes, it must be close enough to the engine to get hot enough. They need to be IIRC about 700 degrees to function properly. If they do not get hot enough you will end up with high emissions;)

Hmm.... Ok. I don't have emmisions testing, So that's not an issue. I guess I should ask if there is any laws about the placement? Said Cat may or may not be hollow. ;)

No emissions testing = replace cat with resonator :)

I've been thinking about removing my cats, however, I have a hunch that they're already cleared out :)

Its already been said, but it has to be close enough to the engine where it gets hot enough to "burn all the bad shit off".

I agree with that.

You trying to redo the exhaust on the track car?

go with a nice cherry bomb muffler as the resonator that sould keep the rasp down.

I had a two into one cat on my old 92. Instead of being in the y-pipe, it was at the end going into the mid pipe. That way we didnt have to make a custom y. It worked well and i was happy with the performance gains, and the new owner is as well.

there are many cars that don't run the cat right after the exhaust manifold.....

don't worry about these people telling you it won't work properly.......

I can even name some ULEV vehicles with the cats downstream......
