Is replacing the carrier gasket along with the rear main seal during clutch service really necessary? I replaced the front main seal with the drill and screw method without any trouble, and I'd like to avoid having to reseal the oil pan.

How much potential for leakage is there with the carrier gasket? I've never had one apart so I don't know first hand. I would guess that its something that can develop a leak just like a valve cover gasket or plug well gaskets. Is that a faulty asumption?

half-way there, I think.
The gasket is a paper/fiber gasket. Since it can't dry out or wear out. I would think it would be very unusual to develope a leak.
