I am haveing a problem with my 90 sho. The car will not go into reverse. when you try to shift to reverse it won't pull back to the gear it just gives you resistence. like if you were to try to go from 5th to reverse. its blocking me from getting to that gear. i don't know what this problem could be. whether its electrical or mechanical. the tranny fluid is probably low. when i parked it just know it felt really weird. the shifter seemed to be harder to move between all the gears. i may have messed it up pulling hard to get to reverse. any help is greatly appreciated.

Try shifting the transmission right at the end of the shift linkage with it disconnected. Try all your gears. And if you still can't shift it, it may be an internal problem and you can eliminate the shift linkage.

You are going from a forward gear then to reverse right? You can't do it from 5th. :) Just making sure you know that.

Grease the ball and socket the shifter goes into before the socket breakes off. Speaking from experience...
You have to disassemble the assembly under the car.

i was using the 5th to reverse to describe how it feels from 1st into reverse.i took it into work and it looks like the shaft coming out of the tranny is where it won-t shift. i mean i physically tried to shift it right where it goes into the tranny.another guy at my work said the tranny is going out. he said reverse is the first to go. also i didn't think this was related but when i try to break the tires(peel out, dump the clutch) the car would buck violently. could this be attributed to a bad tranny?

I think thats what just happened to my car. I went to put it in gear and it was nothing but slop, like theres nothing there. You can just knock the shifter around. So I think it broke. Is that what it felt like when it broke?

it got increasingly harder to put into reverse when my CLUTCH was going, not the tranny. could that be what he means? and howd you try to shift directly at the tranny? if the clutch wasn't engaged then it would obviously not shift (i dont mean that insultingly if you were engaging the clutch)

It could be the clutch, though I had problems with first, not reverse.

Fifth and Reverse are on the same shaft. He *Could* have an internal problem.

The bouncing when dropping the clutch is your tires bouncing up and down. Normal for stock suspension or weak shocks.

Try the following in this order:

Grease the shifter assembly as I stated earlier.
Pull up on the clutch pedal to adjust it.
Change the transmission fluid with Regular ATF to flush out any crap. Change it to Synthetic after 1500 miles if it clears up the problem.

If these three items in this order don't help, check for a broken engine mount that is causing too much play and not allowing your car to get into gear due to the engine having shifted.
Check to see if your subframe is all the way back for proper alignment of shafts and suspension.
Anything else would be clutch, clutch fork bushings, or a problem internally to the tranny.

BTW, one of the SHOTIMES members has a Quaiffed tranny for sale on EBAY.

i had a gentlemen in the car pushing the clutch and trying to put it into reverse while i tryed to pull it in to reverse at the shaft. my guess is internal problem. also the clutch was just replaced with a valeo clutch less than a year ago.
