car running cold!

...you need to replace your thermostat too. It will get 'warm', but not operating temperature hot. It isn't good for your motor, or esp your cats.

Today was the first time i saw the temp gauge move. It was after i had two new mufflers installed. I was driving back to the dealership and the temp gauge went up above the blue section...But i will have to look into that. I'll be searching through old posts for any how-to t-stat replacement guides.


What would be the best t-stat to put in? Someone above said use the 190 and someone else said the oem 195 is better. What are the pro's and con's of the two?

T-stat change is one of the easiest maintenance items to do. If you know the difference between a box end wrench, a screwdriver, and a pliers, you can do this.

You should just buy a 'standard' thermostat. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 190 and a 195 unit.

It is very easy, you just have to be very gentle with the studs. The upper radiator hose feeds into the thermostat housing. You will see two studs/bolts holding it on. Remove the bolts and gently remove the housing & thermostat. Replace it. Reinstall the housing gently - tighten the bolts *gently* and reconnect the hose/refill the motor with coolant. You're done.

I have always used Motorcraft thermostats....they work very well and are designed specifically for this motor.

Just be sure to get one with a jiggle valve. I think there are two different temps available, I'd go with the higher one.

I am thinking about what I am saying, my first draft of this post was a touch 'douchey' (if that's even a word...lol) my second draft started out with the logic escapes me as well but now that i'm thinking about it, i have this:

the coolant isn't sitting in the radiator, its FLOWING through the radiator. constantly, thanks to the water pump. so it doesn't have time to sit in the radiator like it would with a functioning closed t-stat.

i know i'm not crazy, my wife's car had a broken thermostat with it stuck open and she didn't tell me about it for 2 weeks. she just drove it with the windows down and the heater on because she thought i'd get mad her car was broken (woman logic... now that is tricky...)the car would stay cool when she was moving, but she would drive home on the parking lot known as the I 10 from down town to my place here in Ahwatukee off warner rd, stop and go the whole way and the car would overheat from not moving even with the fan full blast. this caused the car to crack the head, not 5 weeks after i replaced the head when it broke a timing belt.

its the opposite problem randysho is having if you think about it, just switch the word cold for hot, and switch the thinking of having the coolant sitting in the engine to heat up, with sitting in the radiator to cool down.

In cold weather such as -30, this fluid does not have the ability to warm properly and usually ice build up will become a hindrance to the proper circulation of the fluid thus causing over-heating. Also, improper water to glycol antifreeze ratio can speed up this process. Too much glycol will congeal quickly adding to the blockage and too much water will dissipate quicker and/or freeze quicker.

A thermostat stuck in the open position will still have enough resistance to allow heat transfer to the coolant and provided the radiator has air flow, it will be able to cool it.

An engine with no thermostat could have issues with heat transfer from the engine to the coolant, but a decent radiator should still be able to shed heat. Can it cause the engine to overheat, possibly, but not always. I have seen a few cars in my lifetime run without a thermostat and overheating was never the problem.

I don't think the juggle valves are needed. I used a plain old cheap Stant t-stat with no problems. What you do need is a cooling system that has no leaks, when hot or cold. The biggest problem for the Taurus was the radiator that would leak when cold. This allows air to stay in the system giving you unreliable cooling.

If the system looses vacuum when cooling down it will never work as it is suppose to.
