Car does not shift

I just recently bought a 94 SHO and the owner told me he had rebuilt the transmission but there was still some sort of problem. So the problems I have found are that the car doesnt shift out of 1st gear (which im guessing is what the tranny prob is) and there is a whining sort of noise in what I think is the alternator. But my main problem is why it does not shift.

Does anyone have and ideas as to what this problem might be and what I should check to see why this is happening? Any help is appreciated.

ATX (automatic) or MTX (manual)???

If an ATX, sounds like the rebuild was bad or something like an electrical connector wasn't put back properly. You could also have a pump/pump shaft problem. That could be your whining. Start by taking the belt off and see if the whining goes away. Then check to make sure all 4 electrical connections to the tranny are connected and tight.

If an MTX, it could be a bad clutch, a bad throw-out bearing, a shifter problem (like the stabilizer rod disconnected), etc.
