Please help...!

On a very hot day, I started my car with no problems. I drove about 100 yards when my car died. I started the car, it ran for few seconds, then died again. Started car again, idled, then died when i went to drive. Started car again, idled for 10 seconds then died. After a few minutes of this, I popped the hood, added half quart oil (oil light came on earlier), and she fired right up and ran rest of the 30 mile trip. No problems since. I had a quarter tank gas & slight oil in plug wells. Why did this happen? Will it happen again? I added gas additive and antifreeze later for sh*ts and giggles. Thanks

Did the CHECK ENGINE light come on during the engine stalls? There is a lot of beneficial information in the stored codes if that light illuminated. See the links at teh bottom of my signature for the very simple method to retrieve the codes and run the EEC tests. It only takes a short jumper and the ignition key.

This at first sounds like a fuel pump issue to me, but it could also be an ignition problem. It does not sound like the typical crankshaft position sensor (CPS) failure mode. The codes would tell the difference.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
My car had this kind of behavior and it was the fuel pump. But it's good to verify that that is indeed the problem before replacing parts. Unfortunately sometimes the verification is easier said than done. Pulling the codes like Scott said is easy. Correct the codes that come up (and post them here!!) and if you still have problems when the suspect codes are taken care of then if it were me I would just go ahead and replace the fuel pump.

Thanks for the quick response all.

Few questions...if it is the fuel pump, is the pump in the tank or external? How much for a new pump? I also have a tendency to run the car til its on fumes, but have never run out of gas. Is this killing my pump. Gonna check the codes. Thanks again

The pump is internal to the tank.

Around $100.

You aren't doing the pump any favors by running that level so low. The pump relies on the volume of gas in the tank for its cooling.

There are a number of posts about How-Tos and pricing and sources. A SEARCH should turn up enough to get you going.

This too sounds like the ole O2 sensors...probably both'em. If I'm not mistaken, the fuel pump, most of the time is a all or nothing part. I mean, if your mileage is ridiculously high, then dem sensors is your first step, partna. And the previous advice is on the money!

DigDeez a bad fuel pump will sometimes make a car stall only to start a few minutes later.
Check the codes and the fuel pressure on the fuel rail. Good luck. thumb
