I am trying to remove the alternator from my '93 ATX. I removed the belt and 3 bolts, but I'll be darned if the alternator won't budge.

Is there a 4th bolt? I removed 2 from the right side and 1 on the left, front side.

I also tried removing the battery tray to get a little more room to work, but that thing is frozen solid (rusted bolt)...

There is also one bolt on the back side that secures the alternator and the lower end of the intake support bracket.

It's a large bolt on the driver side of the alternator and is oriented with the head to the front and the threads to the rear of the car and into the block. It passes through the bottom hole in the front, passenger side intake manifold support bracket. Look for it and you shall find it. I'd take a picture, but my car is not an ATX.

Well, that sounds like one of the bolts I removed...your description is much better than mine, so I'll use yours to describe which bolts I removed...

I removed 2 bolts on the driver side of the alternator; the 1st as you described above (it was a long bolt), the 2nd was nearer to the front of the car and its head pointed toward the driver side (it was below the electical plug and is a short bolt).

I then removed the 3rd bolt, which was on the passenger side. It was a short bolt with the head facing the passenger side.

After taking a hammer to the alternator to try and budge it, I gave up. Especially since it was dark, rainy, and cold.

Thanks for your help!

If I remember correctly, there were three bolts on the passenger side of the alternator. Take a closer look.

There is a small bolt on the back of the alternator, below where it plugs in. It's kinda hard to get to, and on my MTX I had to temporarily remove the exaust manifold heat sheild to use an extension.

When I pulled the alternator on my '89 it was just stuck on there. I took off all the bolts and it wouldn't budge. So I got out my big 'ol yellow flat head screw driver and pryed on the wings/tabs a little bit.

I think that the long bolt that goes through the alternator into the block kind of just made the little wings/tabs (that it goes through) hold it to the bracket...

Good luck.
keep up updated!

OK...here's an update.

4 Bolts - 2 on driver's side, 2 on passenger side. The driver's side boltsare easy to see and 1 of the passenger side bolts is easy to see...the 4th bolt is near the bottom, behind a pulley wheel. So I removed the wheel.

Here's how I removed the alternator:

1) Order new alternator, since noone in Houston seems to have one
2) Remove battery, and electrical connections on alternator
3) Remove battery tray (mine would not come out)
4) Release tension on belt and remove from alternator pulley wheel
5) Remove 3 bolts, pulley wheel, and 4th bolt
6) Grit teeth and pull alternator out toward passenger side (man, that tray sure was in the way!)

Hopefully, I can put the new one back in!

just did mine monday in the rain, I did not have all the bolt problems though, mine came out and went back in fairly easy, whole job took about 2 hours, but I had to wait for the battery tray and bracket to dry, since tray was starting to rust. Didn't really have a problem other than the rain was ******' me off.

I see that several MTX owners responded with their helpful experiences. Please be aware that the alternator mounting arrangements are quite different on the 3.0L and 3.2L engines.

Yep, I figured there was a difference based on some of the responses...in fact, it took trips to 3 different shops to finally find one that could properly test the alternator!
