Hey everyone. I'm new to the Forum. Just got my hands on a 99 SHO. I'm not sure if cams were welded yet or not. If not, does anyone know someone around Ohio that still might do this?

What part of OH? I knew Eric (rickety engineering) used to do them but maybe he passed away? It's been a while but I think that is true. I would take the intake off and see if they are already done. You can't miss the welds on the end of the camshaft. You can post pics if needed. The unfortunate thing is to do this you need to make sure you have access to good the intake and valve cover gaskets. You will need them either way if you take stuff off.

Doug at ford performance specialists in GA is still in business. This is a very narrow specialty so experienced people who have done them are hard to find. Might have to travel. It costs enough to check and see if it is already done before hand.

I'm in Akron so not far from Canfield, Ohio where Eric was doing this work.....just throwing it out there as 20 years has passed since this work was completed

Are you saying it was already done 20 yrs ago?
also this can help contact v8 owners with questions. Alot of off topic stuff but it can be useful contacting v8 sho owners with questions. https://groups.google.com/g/v8sho
No I mean 20 years has passed, probably not many left that do that work. And you're right, sourcing all the gaskets might be difficult as well.

Yeah I would source the gaskets, check the cams to see if they were already done, and then take it somewhere if weld is still needed. You can reuse gaskets especially if they are fresh install. You only might need intake and valve cover (probably one or 2 I'm missing). It's not head gaskets at least
Here are some pics of where to look on the cams for welds. https://www.taurusclub.com/threads/1996-sho-cam-weld-question.182490/

Also, at the question "Does this spot require welding as well ?", the answer is YES.

By the way, I made some years ago a word document with many photos of an engine tear down to help me with this job. With an email, I can send it to you if needed. :)

What do you know about the transmission? I doubt many Gen 3's are still running on original unmodified trannies (IE w/o Shift Kit OR rebuild). If you can't find someone familiar with the car closer to home, Doug Lewis is about as experienced as any out there. His shop is a stone's throw from Six Flags over Atlanta, so if you have family, you could make a trip out of it. Tons to do in Atlanta as well. Just know that he's getting up there in years and even though he has a couple guys helping (maybe 1?), his yard is usually full of "to-do's". I had my 98 trailered up there September of 2020 and wasn't able to get it back till August of 2021. He is very personable and will keep you informed/updated of where he is with the work when he's able to get to it.

My buddy and V8SHO fanatic JohntheSHOguy welded my cams out West in Los Angeles, CA. He lost his welder guy who did the welds for me, but he may be able to assist w/ a contact in your part of the US. Doug Lewis, echoing previous poster is definitely the go-to SHO guy down South.
