Hello,
I just found this site and also just purchased a 96 SHO this past Saturday at a really good price. Now I know why! I have read all the information out there on cam welding and definately need to have it done ASAP. The car has 96,000 miles on it and is definately ticking and parked until I can get this done. At first I thought it would need the 60,000 mile check-up but now I realize it needs more. I have a few questions to ask
1) Are my current cams useable or do I need to replace them and have those welded? The reason I ask is if the cam sprocket has "slipped" on the cam won't that throw the engine out of time just a little?

2) Anyone out there know of a reputable mechanic who knows the procedure in Eugene, Oregon or vicinity?

3) The car has keyless entry but no owners manual. Anyone know where the access code is? I know Ford used to have a sticker on the inside of the trunk lid but not on this one.

Other than that the car is beautiful and has been well taken care of. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,

On the cam weld contact Terry Kelly at [email protected] he lives in Federal Way / Tacoma area. He did some research and found a guy in the N/W to do his last month. Next closest is someone in Sacramento and Terry has his number also.

Good luck,

hello all new here and i bought a 96 sho with a busted cam, i knew they had a report of that, but i found the price to fix it to high to fix for my budget and i do all the work, anyways i bought the car for a ford dealer and they are upset ford did nothing about the problem but they told me that they have seen a lot come in with the cams welded and said when the cars get some higher miles that the weld can cause the cam to be off balance enough that they where the cam journails out and can cause problems later on due to there is no cam bearings in the head. they said they would advise getting the cams pinned it would not throw the cams out of balance that much to see a differance, and that is what they have been doing now pinning the cams. i dont know how much truth to all that is but it does make scence. i have redone alot of cars but nothing this costly.

That's entirely baloney. We've put factory and welded cams on a lathe that could check balance and there was no measureable difference. The total mass of three welds on one cam is barely a gram. All the cars that have been welded have probably accumlated a couple of million miles or more and there's never been a failure caused by an imbalance of the cams. I suspect the joker at the Ford dealer probably has little if any knowledge of physics or mechanical engineering, so I wouldn't recommend believing a thing he has to say on the matter.

When you find the spun cam gear , realighn it , weld it and do a compression check to make sure the valves are functioning and not bent .

May want to start here. Combined knowledge of lots of people over the years. I would also suggest you have these welded by someone familar with the technique.

For the one nearest you.
I have seen what crappy welds can do to a car in short order.
