calif. egr

I have a recently purchased 89' calif. car, it has components for a egr system. The motor does not have an egr valve. I believe it is a non-calif. motor, or atleast the intake. I am getting a code 31 indicating a egr problem. My question is- Does the calif. emissions equipped car use the same ECU as the the non-calif. emisson cars? I see 2 extra components 1 on the rear of the rear head & which I removed when changing a heater hose & 1 on the lf. frt. shock tower. There are also vacume lines not leading anywhere. Since I removed the device on the back of the head & unplugged it I am getting the code 31. logic tells me to put it back on but why if there is no egr valve to control. How can I remove these other 2 components & not get a code. This motor is in good condition with low miles on a rebuild.

This is'nt about passing smog, this is about a check engine light. code 31. I know these engines in good cond. pass smog without cats. I want to know if the cailif. car has a different ECM than a 49 state car? I would like to elliminate the other EGR components. Does it possibly have a different harness?

Oh. Their's has the spots for the EGR, but the wholes are plugged. Came like that, heh. Not sure on the ECM.

Yes, the CPU's are different for California EGR cars. If you have a 49 state engine intalled and don't change the CPU the you will get the code and a check engine light since there is no EGR to sense.

I wouldn't just leave vacuum lines leading to nowhere sucking air into who knows where.

The vacume device on the LF. shock tower will be removed and at that time I will find a vacume diagram and route vacume as a 49 state car should be.

I replaced the B9C modual with the B9B as well as finding the vacume source for the egr & plugged it. No more check eng lamp.
