I was looking at an older '89 SHO which has the cable shifter and was wondering what would be the cause of this. I haven't personally inspected it yet, so I'm going from what I've heard. It will shift into gears, but it won't go anywhere when it is in gear.

Tranny, shifter, or clutch?

Opinions appreciated! :)

Can't be the diff because you can still drive it in gear.

Does it have problems going into gear? Does it grind when you release the clutch? Does the speedo move when you give it gas in gear?

Could be the diff - he did say it goes into gear but the car won't move, but generally there is a lot of noise associated with a broken diff. I'd say the clutch is toast. However, if the speedo is reading speed then I would say broken cv shaft.

Clutch is toast. If the clutch pedal is heavy and you can hear the throw out bearing.

That is a common problem with a clutch on an SHO that is shot. You can only shift it with the car off.
