Butterfly plate screw question

Ok I am taking apart my butterflies because I'm going to make some BBBs. I got the two screws that hold the main pieces together out. Now I'm in the process of taking the screws on the plates out. I've read that they are shot peened in(Not quite sure what this means) and that you need to grind the ends to get them to come out. Is that absolutly necessary or can I get the screws out using a special bit or another tool? If I do have to grind the ends off, would i be able to with a dremel?

I just want to get the BBBs done. And also, does anybody know where replacement screws can be purchased for the plates, or smaller screws that work?

Shot peened as in riveted?

Cut the head off with your dremel and poke the rest out with a dentel pick? Sounds good to me.

NO, don't cut the head off because they are not a rivet.

They are a screw. If I remember correctly, you need to grind down the tail end of the screw until the grinding wheel touches the arm that rotates.

Then, being careful, use a screwdriver and back out the tiny screws.

If you cut the head of the screws off, you will have no way to remove them, besides drilling them out, and using an easy out from the back side.

Ultimately, don't grind the heads of the screws, grind down the other end, and then back out the screw.

By the way, if you go too fast when grinding, and heat the tiny screw to where it mushrooms the end over the arm that rotates, you'll be back to square one. So take it easy and let the grinding action of the grinder to slowly eat away at the screw, vs digging in too fast, heating up the metal and having it mushroom over.

I have done 4 sets of BBB and never had to grind anything off the screw end. What you need is a proper fitting screwdriver that fits snugly in the slot. Put lots of pressure on it for the first 1/2 turn or so. Do not allow it to slip out of the slot or else it will be a real PITA to get out. Make sure the butterfly casting is held real securely so the screwdriver doesn't slip. Good luck

Thanks for the responses. I am going to grind down the ends if using a certain screwdriver bit doesn't work. Hyprsho, do you know what size bit you used? I'm not sure but something like a 5/32 bit? Or is there a certain screwdriver I can buy? Any info about which I would need would be great.

The bit should fill the slot of the head, both in width and length. The edges of the bit must be sharp so that the force is applied to the bottom of the slot, not near the top.

Ok. I found a really good screwdriver and it works as long as you apply a bunch of pressure. The only thing is if the screw starts stripping a bunch it gets hard to unscrew the screws. 2 of the screws started stripping when I used other tools to try and get them out.(Before I got the good screwdriver) I managed to get one of the screws out but the other is stripped pretty bad. I'll have to keep trying. The others are coming out without much of a problem.

Now the important question I have is....Can you buy new screws for the butterfly plates? I'm going to need at least two and I would just replace them all while I'm at it. Will any screw work as long as it has the same diameter thread? Anybody have a specific size or something?

I've got some of those.....somewhere, unless my brother took them to wisconsin without asking. I will try that if I can't get it out.

I think I read I can use new screws as long as they are the same diameter, length, and pitch. What exactly is the pitch, what does it mean? When I get new screws is there a style that is better then another?(flathead versus phillips versus hex)
