I drive my car everyday back and forth to work just about a 15 minute highway drive everyday. Lately in the past 2 weeks or so I have noticed that I smelt something burning under the hood. Usually I smell the burning more and more as I get on it. So I got on it pretty hard today playing cat and mouse with an srt4. So I got back to my house and smelt the horrible smell worse then ever. So I see smoke coming out of my cowl hood, so I popped the hood open and saw the smoke coming up behind the engine, so I crawled underneath the car to see if I could notice anything smoking and it was both catalytic converters. What could this mean? The cats are no good, maybe oil is leaking on them a little bit causing them to burn it off because I know I do have a slight oil leak that is being fixed this monday. Any other possibilities? This has never happened until I had my vehicle speed sensor replaced and obviously you need to take the y pipe off to get at it. Could that have anything to do with it? Thanks for any input that you might have, I need some help to get this problem fixed asap. My belt also is pretty noisy under the hood, sort of like a screeching sound. I asked some people and they said possibly the belt is on there too tight or the belt possibly may be no good. Ever hear of that problem? Once again thanks for any help you may have.

Most likely oil (or coolant?) (power steering-cam seal)

the inside of catalitic coverter is made of ceramic , and the engine is not able to "burn" that , not hot enough.

I got right underneath the car and didn't see any coolant leak or any sort. The car has an oil leak which is probably getting worse and worse. When I come to think of it, sort of does smell like oil burning off on the cats. Hopefully when I get the oil leak fixed this monday there will be no more burning problem. :thumb:

Yeah, I'm sure it's just something (probably oil) burning on the exhaust/cats. The exhaust could be glowing red-hot and it still wouldn't smoke like that.. there has to be something contacting the outside of the exhaust for it to do that.

I see your car is an atx, and I dunno if the tranny cooler lines run anywhere near the same spot as on my mtx, but I had the problem where one of my tranny cooler lines broke, dripped onto the cat, and burnt all the wiring on the firewall. Pretty much sucked...
