broken valve

does anyone kno how to fix a broken valve. i am really tight on money but not mechanically inclined either. plus i would really like to have the satifaction of fixing it myself. if anyone had any tips or kno were i can find literatoure about this repair please let me know. Thanks

i took it to a mechanic for an estimate. its clicking right under the valve cover. its not a knock because it would be from the bottom and the car feels really sluggish and puts now. he quoted me at 1600-1800 dollars

Sounds lika a valve shimming is in order. A broken valve is very uncommon on a SHO. In fact, the only broken valves I know of where a direct result of fatigued aftermarket springs. This resulted in catastrophic (sp?) damage to the engine. I think your mechanic is trying to rip you off. By the way, most SHO's have that ticking noise under the valve cover, very common.

is that causing the engine to putter, almost like a miss-fire? the sound has been getting worse...and is shimming a hard repair for an amature?

Shonut sells a video on how to adjust the valve lash, and i think rents a kit with the tools and an assortmetn of shims. If he doesn't I know that the SHOshop does for sure. It dosen't look like to hard of a job for anyone with some basic mechanical skills. Your run of the mill local mechanic prolly has never even seen a SHO engine before, let alone knows how to work on one. Do it yourself and save, or if you nearby someone that knows how to do it, have them. Where are you located? I know I got a sub $200 quote from Mark N. recently, but I think I want to tackle it myself. I think....

Bent valves are not impossible but are very rare on this car. Does this mechanic have SHO motor experience? I think you should look for a (somewhat) local guy who knows the car to give you a hand.

There are a few things that tick and a few more things that can cause a loss of performance. Have you tried checking for computer codes? Look for oil in the plug wells? how old are the plugs and wires? cyl. balance test? Compression leak down test? How long since the valve lash was adjusted? How many miles on this car? How old is the timing belt?

Oh and IF the valve is bent the shims won't make it run normally, but should be adressed at the same time since the heads will be open anyway.

Unfortunately, replacement of a valve will require the removal of the head.

The job just got WAAAAAYYYYY bigger, if that is required.

Then you get into the 'Might as well"s, which will likely include the words "junk it" at some point.

Since you`re just north of Syracuse,try contacting Drew(shotyme95).He may have a head he can just swap out for you for about 1/4 the price your mechanic is estimating.
