I have a 2010 SHO without the performance package. 17,000 miles
I think the brake pedal feel is horrible. It just keeps sinking.
I have almost had 3 accidents due to the pedal falling to the floor with no
feel. The pads and rotors look fine. My 1999 Crown Vic has a better feel.
I noticed Ford has completely overhauled the system for 2013.
In my opinion these brakes aren't enough for this heavy twin turbo car, and
are unsafe.
Any thoughts?

They should still be stopping the car. Have you had them checked? If you overheat the pads, they can glaze and lose their effectiveness...

Pickup a set of aftermarket rotors & pads. It will make a world of difference. I went with Powerslot rotors all 4 wheels, Stop Tech pads on the front and Hawk pads on the rear. My car stops like a champ now.

What is the TSB. I've noticed driving my wifes SHO that when coming from a stop higher speeds a grinding noise feel, although the brakes aren't worn out.

Has any company come up with Brembo swap? Used GT500 calipers are fairly cheap, but a mount and rotor would have to be assembled.

Grinding noise is one of the issues that will get you the TSB fix. I never had that happen in first 20K, so I just went ahead and bought new rotors/pads like Red Candy SHO. Definitely helps the stopping. Of course my lighter un-sprung weight due to my much lighter wheels/tires also helps.

Our brakes can be made to stop quick, a couple times straight... Going with aftermarket packages only keeps them stopping quickly for much longer periods. In G8 GT's vs G8 GXP, the GT's actually stopped as quick or quicker the first time, vs the GXP with fron Brembos. It's just that they start to fade after that, while the Brembos work well many times. Friend ran his G8 GT at Sebring trial. It was heavily modded with Magnacharger etc. His brakes were stock. He wore them out on Sat, and didn't pass inspection for the Sunday finale! Said he was passing the Porsches on the straights, and they were beating him by almost 40 mph in the corners!

Took my 2011 Sho to the dealer and showed them the TSB and they Just turned the rotors and put new brakes on. Took care of the vibration that i had slowing the car at 70 or over.

If I have to stop quickly after getting away from a stop or light. The pedal is wooden as ****. I think the engine boost is affecting the brake boost. It is dangerous. My woman's 2011 Mustang has a fantastic pedal. My 1990 Mustang (Cobra brakes) pedal feels awesome. My 2010 $45,000 SHO feels like shit. I need help.

Sounds like you need a brake booster replacement (hard pedal). Should also get checked for a master cylinder leak (soft pedal), known to happen rarely on the Gen 4.1s. Could be air in the system if you have had the brakes serviced. Did you get the SHO new?

Bought it new. Have never liked the pedal feel. Brought it to Ford dealer. They claimed that both rear calipers were not working. They changed both (not the pads, cheap bastards.) In the process they twisted the brake hose on the left side, (like a f'n pretzel). Took it back. They untwisted it. (should have replaced it). After all of that. They said that the brake system was working as designed.

I agree with you on both brake booster and master cylinder. As well as air in the system. The brakes work, but the pedal is really soft. Add to that the scary emergency gas to brake situation.

Over the course of 20+ years of dealing with Ford dealer incompetence, and profit first local mechanics, I have learned to love fixing things myself.

Will bleed the system tomorrow.

Will price out both above parts.

Thanks.

Wow, that is some suffering they put you through! Slide pins do seem to be a weak point on the rear calipers (hear a lot about them seizing if not serviced regularly). The rear brakes on these AWDs also take on a larger share of the work compared to the fronts, so tend to wear out quicker.

Looking forward to what you find out :)

EDIT: Saw this diagnostic flowchart, thought I'd post it ...

Didn't get to the bleed today. Frozen garage and playoff football kept me inside. Lions curse remains intact.

I wonder if the collision warning software is to blame for my pedal softness.
If that kicks in the pedal is really firm (too much), then the pedal goes back to soft. Am thinking a bleed won't change that.

Over all this car is a quiet luxury car first. Very quick, not playful. Excellent highway car. Not an SHO. Engine is powerful and efficient, boring sounding.
I like this car, not love it.

Do love the Hellcat Challenger....

Too bad about the Lions :( Can't say I feel any better, with my team six feet under most of the time!

May be on to something with the collision warning thing. Do the brakes work properly at that point? Is the pedal feel "good" compared to normal circumstances for your SHO, or does it become an immovable object?

Ford's Collision Warning with Brake Support technology activates a visual and audible warning when the system detects a high risk of collision with the vehicle in front.

In addition, the brake system is pre-tensioned and the "servo boost" assistance system is modulated to provide faster brake performance (e.g., as soon as the driver lifts the gas pedal), if required by the driver.

Range and speed information are sensed with long-range radar mounted on the front of the vehicle.

Collision Warning with Brake Support can be activated or deactivated as the driver wishes. If the sensor becomes blocked by snow, ice or mud, the driver will receive a notice of reduced or suspended functionality.

This technology is available in North America on the Ford Taurus, Edge and Explorer and the Lincoln MKS, MKX and MKT, and in Europe on the Ford Mondeo, S-MAX, Galaxy and Focus. The technology will also be available on the new 2013 Ford Fusion in North America.

I am guessing your car does not have a tune? Big world of difference in performance (which is engine + drivetrain involvement) with and without. And you can keep it under control if you so choose :).

Sound factor can be improved somewhat with the BOV cover removal, free-flowing filters, upgraded downpipe & catback (cutouts if you are all-in).

But can it sound like an all-out V8? Not mechanically, that's for sure.

I have the SAME problem with my 2010 SHO. No clue what the remedy is. It's pretty terrifying that after punching it to get around someone and needing to stop right away that the pedal is rock hard. Then when I want to stop casually on the freeway it is soft as a sponge. I heard of some people putting the booster and master cylinder from the EcoBoost F150 in the Taurus but I dont know if it ACTUALLY helps.

Please keep me posted with what youre thinking about doing to your SHO. How can I check to see if rear calipers are frozen or stuck?
