Brakes...I need a general explanation

What all is involved in the brakes? Maybe a picture or diagram would help. Mainly I don't know what the caliper does, but I just kinda want to know what the name for everything is. Can anyone shed some light!

The calipers squeeze the brake pads against the rotor to create friction to slow the car down. Sorry, I dont have any diagrams to explain better.
