brake question

I own a 93 ATX and found a 95 ATX in a wreaking yard. What would I gain by replacing the 93 with 95 brakes and spindles?

You'd gain slightly larger rotors (10.9"), and have the option of upgrading to the even larger '96+ rotors (11.6") if you decide you want to.

Oh wow, didn't think that I would gain anything. To put 96 rotors on, you need the 95 spindles? Well I think I am going to make a run to the yard then.

Yes, you need '94 or '95 knuckles, calipers, and bolts (they're all the same for both years).

If you go this route, be aware that you will need to reuse the bracket-to-knuckle bolts from the 94/95 along with the 96+ FN74 brackets. I think the bolts that come stock on the Gen 3s are too long to use with the 94/95 knuckle.

If you are like most of us and are tired of warped rotors from them getting overheated because they are too wimpy, then you gain a lot since you virtually eliminate that problem, especially if you go to 96+ rotors.

If you have never experienced warped rotors or poor stopping with your car in its current configuration, then you only gain a lighter wallet.

one word of caution, your spare won't fit the 11.5" 96 upgrade

get a bigger spare, or put the spare on the rear and move good rear tire to front if you get a flat

Wow good to know. Going down to harbor freight to get a set of spring compressors the car sits up off of the ground and brakes and etc are easy to get at.

Well,after getting out to the wreaking yard, realized that they have hauled the SHO off to the crusher. Sad. There was a lot of good parts on that car. Looking around I found a couple of Taurus GL's that are pretty loaded. Will the knuckles be fine coming off of a GL or do the brake set up has to be SHO only?

The spindles can come off of any 94/95 Taurus or Sable as long as they have ABS.

Thanks the Taurus GL's are pretty loaded so the next time make a run to the wreaking yard, I will check for ABS. That helps a lot.

Another alternative is to order new caliper bracket bolts from Ford, in a pack of four. PN N807146-S103

Compatible calipers and FN74 brackets are easy to find because you can get them off of most any late model Taurus, Ford 500, or Sable. The late model calipers are more likely to be in good shape.
