So I decided to try and customize the stock grille on my 2010 SHO, wanting to get rid of the chrome. Since we don't really have many grille options I thought I'd try and make my own. I don't mind the design of the stock grille, but it is a lot of chrome. I know I could have used plasti dip, but I wanted to experiment with something a little more durable and permanent, so I decided to use black truck bed liner. Not wanting to ruin mine since it is in mint condition, I obtained a grille from a salvage yard for only $40, came off a Taurus SEL. Then I started to take the grille apart, it is actually 3 different pieces that are sandwiched together, was kinda difficult to pry the pieces apart without damaging anything. The very back piece is already a black plastic so all I did was clean it up. The other 2 pieces are the silver/gray painted insert in the middle and then the main chrome part on the very front. These 2 pieces I sanded down pretty well, with a 150 grit sandpaper. Then I primed 3 coats with a self etching primer. Then came the bed liner, I used rustoleum truck bed coating, put on about 6 thin coats. The finish looks pretty good, looks like its a black textured plastic, and not just painted. I'm waiting for it all to dry and cure well before putting it all back together and putting the ford emblem back on. Here are some pics so far, I'll get some more pics when it's back together and on the car.
