I like the look of black B and C pillars; I got a can of black paint, but I haven't done anything yet. I know there will be some sanding and masking off involved, but are there any things I should be aware of before I try to paint the pillars?

Clean and Prime the surface WELL first! 90% of painting is preperation. 90% of crapy paint jobs is lack of surface preperation.

If the paint is in good shape and ya don't sand through the clear coat then you do not have to prime. It wont hurt if you do but it is not needed unless you have some scrathes that need to be filled.

You might want to get an item called "Fine Line" tape made by 3M. Use it on the top of the B-pillar when you tape off. This will give a nice straight line across the top. A better job then masking tape will.

Also only use 3M masking tape as it does not bleed. The cheaper brands do tend to blead through.

Go for it. I'll be doing it to my car once I paint it

Ah, sweet. I was wondering if I would need to sand it, as someone who had it before me had it repainted (same color as original), but didn't have a clearcoat put on it. I was thinking that just a good cleaning and scrubbing would prep the surface well enough.

Nick- You mus ALWAYS sand the area/areas to be painted. This gives the paint a good surface for adhesion. With out sanding it will flake off in a matter of time.

As to the question about what are B and C pillars, when you view the car from the side, the letters refer to the metal frame connections between the the body side and the roof. The A pillar is the frame between the front windshield and the front side window. The B pillar is the combined frames of the front and back windows in the middle of the passenger compartment. The C pillar is the frame between the rear side window and the rear window (with the defroster). See the labeled picture below.

Two door cars only have A and B pillars.

My first choice would be to go to a place that does decals and buy some black 3M sheet tape. If you apply it on a warm surface in a heated garage you should be able to stretch and bend it as necessary.

Second choice would be paint. Before you even touch sandpaper use a good wax remover first. If you dont you will force the wax into the paint. After proper cleaning, only sand enough to take the gloss off the top coat, try not to sand down to the primer. Cornors and ridges usually have less paint on them and should be sanded last. The paint will not properly adhere to anything shiny. When you sand use 400 or 600 and wet sand the area. This will leave a smooth clean surface to apply the paint to. I would use a matte black or semi-gloss paint. High gloss will show imperfections more, flat will mask imperfections, but is ugly. What ever you do Dont leave the masking tape on overnight. If it gets wet and dries it will never come off without damaging the paint. After painting wait at least 30 days, longer if its cold there before waxing.
