Hey guys, im new to the forum and fairly new to owning my SHO. while the car has been in my family since '95, i just took over from my mother in may and i have been having quite a few costly problems and strange noises coming from under the hood.

i recently took my car into the local ford dealership for an oil change and before they took the car to the back they checked my PS fluid and told me it needed to be changed. they opened up the fluid container and the fluid was completely black and had metal flakes in it. after bringing it back they told me i needed a new rack and PS pump. they also told me it was going to be 1600 bucks.

i also had a check engine light come on and after checking the codes i got a lean on the bank closest to the radiator and a fuel pump relay code. after checking the spark plugs on that bank, it was reviled that there was a build up of oil and after cleaning it out, i have had no problems. this doesnt explain the fuel pump relay light which has mysteriously disapeered.

the last problem i have been having is a strange pinging noise coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. it idles just fine, but when you give it a little bit of gas this tapping/pinging sound comes out. sounds like metal on metal and that cant be good.

i guess im just wondering if anyone knows of any shops in Phoenix AZ that know how to take care of this specialize motor. im not going to the dealership for this one.

any information from anyone on these engine codes and strange noise would be extremely helpful. the car is in too good of condition to just bail out on it, especially after i just did a timing belt/water pump, a/c compressor/ clutch and cam shaft sensor.

I'm going to take a guess that the fuel pump relay code was a 542, and all it means is that the engine had stalled at some point. Absolutely nothing to worry about there.

The "pinging" or rattle you hear is hard to pinpoint without hearing it, but my first impression was a failed cam chain tensioner. Using a mechanics stethescope you can probably pinpoint the source of the noise.

I would recommend doing the 60k Maint. as it sounds like its never been done (plug wells full of oil) the sound you are hearing could also be arcing from the plug wires to ground.

Try contacting Jason (yamahasho on this forum) as he knows a lot of people in the SHO world in arizona. Go here visit his website and contact him -> http://www.cardomain.com/id/yamahasho

Good luck!

yea the 60k was done along with the 100k about 2 months ago since it has 106k on it now. they said the oil was not fresh and that it looked like it was a build up over time. the plugs looked good after they were cleaned up but id have to ask my dad when the last time he did plug wires though.

any help you could get me in phoenix would be great jason, hope to hear from you soon.

I forwarded your e-mail to another SHO guy in Cave Creek. He is very knowledgeable on SHOs... I, unfortunately, will not be in Phoenix till Thanksgiving time. I would suggest new plugs and wires, especially if you are not sure when they were replaced. If you do not get your problems fixed before I get there I would love to help you out. I will PM you with my cell phone number.
Take care,
