What are the best speaker upgrades for the JBL system in the SHO? I'm looking for suggestions for replacing the fronts with something and adding rears as I only have the JBL sub in the rear.

I put Boston SL80's in the front and SX85's in the back, and an 8" JL Sub to replace the stock sub of my Explorer Sport with MACH sound. I just think Boston speakers sound really good off the factory amp. I kind of wish I would've went with and Infinity sub though as I think it would have been a bit louder with the stock amp.

I would say something you should think about is keeping a set together.... like get all of the same type of speaker so they will sound balanced...

When I get mine, I'm going Polk Audio Dx series... I just keep finding better things to do with $300-$400 bux each time I get it.. :)ww

I have the JBL system and wanted to keep the stock jbl sub and upgrade the front speakers and was wondering if it would be good to put some rear speakers in since with the JBL system they only put in the sub back there. I don't know the stock speaker size in front or the ratings but what sizes/ratings would be good? I think the stock JBL amp is 80w.

Looking to spend no more than $200 for the 2 speaker sets.

This leads me to believe that you only have a Subwoofer in the rear of your car....? There should be the sub AND 2 5"x7"s back there.

Well if he has a 93, as his username suggests, he will have a subwoofer and two 6x8"s back there.

6x9"s fit back there just fine, though; all you gotta do is drill 4 new holes for them.

You'll probably be disappointed with aftermarket speakers hooked up to the factory amps, I ran some 60 dollar 6x8 pioneers like that in my old sho with the factory amp for a few months, and it just didn't sound right.

Right now, I've got alpine type s 6 inchers in the front hooked up to a JVC head unit, and another set of 60 dollar 3 way pioneer 6x8s in the back hooked up to a 4 channel 840 watt cheap Jensen amp, with the other two channels bridged into a 12 inch Pioneer sub in a sealed box... all walmart stuff excepting the alpines in the front. And, it sounds pretty damn good. It's all how you set it up, you can spend thousands on a system, and if you don't spend some time calibrating it, it will sound like ass all the time.

I went with Pioneer relatively cheap speakers in my GenIII and I thought they sounded better than stock at the time. Now they sound kinda tinny. However, in my other car (GTP), I went with affordable Boston Acoustics front and back and an affordable lower powered amp. It's miles ahead of anything that you just slap in with an oem setup and it's not that expensive or elaborate. Alot of oem setups have funky ohm speakers that are designed as a system and most aftermarket speakers are 4ohm. You take your chances with adding them in and sound quality.

I agree with everybody above re: amps. Definitely don't use the stock amps if you want aftermarket speakers to not sound like *****. I'm running my two JL 10W1s off an Alpine MRP-T350 (maybe 350T? can't remember exactly) and my two rear Pioneer 6x9"s off a 175WRMS Pioneer amp. That leaves my two front Pioneer speakers run off the Alpine HU. It sounds FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC.

On a related note, I just replaced the blown JBL sub in my '95 ATX using the OEM enclosure with an Image Dynamics ID8D4 V.3. It was an easy retrofit and has good linearity and fill with the rest of the stock set-up. Definitely made the whole system sound better in my opinion. It would be nice if I had a multi-band EQ instead of just tin and boom adjustments. Not like it matters much cause once I get over 40mph the road noise starts to come through and washes it all out.

Not to hijack the thread too much, but how do I get that PITA carboard amp cover back in place? The kid that had the car before me blew the stock sub out, then pulled the cover completely off so he could f'up the harness and shove a 10" sub-box in there that sounded like crap. It almost looks like it wedges itself behind the back seat?

Absolutely agreed. I'd rather have nothing. Sony needs to get out of the car audio business.

Their quality went down for quite a while but their new mid to upper level head units are decent for the price. I wouldn't use their speakers though.
