i bought a new master cylinder yesterday and of course you must bench bleed this. how the **** do you bench bleed it outside of the car with the half inch hole in the resevoir for the hose that goes down to the abs pump? is there a way i havent really thought of? i held the master in the engine compartment and connected the large hose to bleed it and the fluid really squirted out of the rearward hole but the front hole just kept spitting. now the resevoir is full while doing this. just wondering if there is a better way?

Rubber test tube plug from hardware store, or install short piece of hose with open end plugged using wood dowel, RTV, etc.

bench bleeding can be done without the reservoir attached. you can also do it in the vehicle with the reservoir removed. it may be easier to mount the res if the pins are removed, then it just goes straight down and the pins are re-inserted. I'll be the first to admit it can be a bit clumsy to do. you can substitute small stainless screws for the pins.

actually, now that I've thought about it, just drive the pins back to where they are flush for easy install/removal of the res.

first off, jack the car so the ms is level. suck the res dry with something, rags under it etc. drive the pins back to release the res. remove lines and cap or plug to limit air into lines, use adapters and hoses to run the fluid back into the top holes, pump away,,slowly, keeping an eye on fluid level

remember, brake fluid destroys paint on contact

so i remove the resvoir and run the little bleeder hoses back into the top of the master where the fluid will be sitting

yep, for the newbies among us, the purpose of bench bleeding is to get air out of the cylinders of the MS, as the bubbles go out the line and into the fluid at the top, they just bubble up and leave. keepsome fluid up there, don't want to just suck in more air, when the res is reattached it simply adds more fluid to the holes. there will be some air as the lines are hooked back up, so regular bleeding is still needed
