I am having an issue with the battery light coming on. Whenever I start the car and drive it the battery light will come on. It comes on intermittently and not usually for an extended period. It will come on for a few seconds and then go off and then come on again. This usually happens in the low end of the RPM range. It also only usually happens when the car is cold, once it has warmed up the light will stay off. I checked the batter with a meter and got about 12.5 when the car was off and at idle it was about 14.5. Whenever the light comes on though the car feels as though it is not firing and I have to give it some more gas to get it to rev up. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about what could be the cause of this. By the way the cables have been tightened to the posts multiple times so I'm sure there not loose.

When we bought the car we had to wait some time as the guy we bought it from put in a new alternator. I should have mentioned that. Also FYI this is on a 1995 MTX with approximately 90,000 miles

If you have another means of transportation you could take it off and take it to a local Advance Auto or Auto Zone and get it tested, it's easy and free. New can still be broken.

Make sure all the battery cable connections are clean and solid too.

The battery light circuit is a two way one. If the battery voltage is higher at the battery light module than the voltage coming from the alternator then the light comes on. If the voltage at the battery light module is higher than the battery open circuit voltage, it stays off.

Anytime the alternator is running and producing, the voltage should be higher than the battery open circuit voltage.

I just checked that small connector...I was able to pull it off without unattaching it. It simply just slides on and off. I am guessing that this is the root of the problem. How would I go about fixing that? Do they sell replacements and does anyone know what the connector is used for/is called?

Well.... I have the same issue. Simply re-route the wire under the big wire. That has cured my problem for now. I find that the plastic connector gets brittle with age and simply breaks off! Hope that helps you.

P.S. I still have to push it tight every now and then but, my battery light does not come on.

You can try to give the male part of the connector a slight twist so it gives a better friction fit.

Or you can go to the dealership. They should be able to come up with a pigtail for the wire.
