Hoping you v8 guys can lend a hand here. I have to do a tune up on my cousins 98 SHO. And was wondering if the valve shims needed are the same as for the v6's? Also does anyone have a picture of a before and after shot of welded cams?

Thank you in advance....

The shims are the same, but they don't seem to need frequent checking like the V6's.

Here's one of my welded cams:

The V8 shims have a small hole in them to make getting them out easier with a blast of air. The V6 buckets have a slot that allows you to use a pick to get the shim out. You can use a V6 shim and still get it out with a blast of air though.

The V6 shims are usually in a different range than the V8 ones though I think. You can also use motorcycle shims from Kawasaki or Yamaha as long as the diameter is the same.

so your gonna adjust the valves to do a tune up?

what are you trying to accomplish to his car? just fix it up or do a bunch of pointless stuff?

if you don't have a misfire I'd leave the ignition system alone..... get your moneys worth out of it..... really ain't gonna do too much on a stock SHO to change it

Never hurts to check the valve clearance. If they don't need adjusting then no more work needs done in that respect.

The car does have a miss. So I have to pull the intake anyway. If I have time pulling the valve covers is no big deal to at least check the clearance. The intake has never been off the car in 170k so it is time to check it all over. And I may as well weld the cams if I go that far anyway.

I'd get four coils and put them in the back. Be sure to wrap some more insulation around the coil wires that lay on the back valve cover. I use high temp convoluted tubing (has a gray stripe on it), adding it over the OEM stuff.
