I just bought a 95 SHO MTX with 80,000 miles on it. The seller said that the 60K tune-up was done. However, the car is running funny. Sometimes it runs fine and sometimes it does not. When it is not runnig right it seems that it has no power when you push down on the accelerator. It just makes this wierd gurgling noise that seems to be coming from the exhaust. When I pump the accelerator it seems to help and when it gets up in RPMs it surges forward and you can really feel the true power of the motor and man is it great! It only seems to lag at low speed. This is my first SHO so I really dont know much about them. Can someone please tell me what may be wrong with my car. Its seems like something is stuck sometimes and when it opens the car runs fine. Thanks.

Thats the same issue I'm having with my Topaz. It is dead at low RPMs, but when I lay into it the RPMs shoot up and it surges forward, but there is like a second delay between pedal depression and actual speed.

Thanks for the welcome.

It does hold idle and the rpms do not drop when you apply the gas. Just got back from running to the store. Car ran good going and bad coming back. Same thing, no power when gas is applied, funny noise like a gurgel from somewhere and then it kicks in. However, this time it seemed worse. :oogle:

Check www.midwestsho.com and do the code test. Or Shophoenixprooject.com

Give us the codes. Check the plug wires and check where the plugs are at for oil in the plug wells.

also go to Shotimes.com and read through any parts of the FAQ. If you see oil in the plug wells most likely the 60k was not done. Or at least not done properly.

so
oil in wells?
plug wires attached?
What plugs are installed? Only 1-2 plugs work well with this car. Motorcraft or Autolites.
Codes?

Then come back for some real help.

Have codes! The key on - engine off test came up with 565 then 111. The key on - engine running test came up 111 then 111. The cylinder balance test came up 9, 9, 9. plugs and wires are motorcraft

No :hail: oil in spark plug wells. Can you give me some advice here. Thanks

Thanks to all of you for getting back to me. This is my first SHO and I am starting to get alittle worried. From what I have read in the forum, it seems that you all spend more time fixing the SHO than you do driving it. Hope mine is not that bad. I really like the car. Anyway, I went back under the hood to do the paper clip test again and found that my neg. battery terminal was lose and really grimey. I went and got two new gold plated ones; cleaned everything up real good and put the new ones on. I then ran the trouble code test again. Came up with the same code 565, but the car seems to be running much better. At least for now. :thumb:

Could a lose and grimey battery terminal make a SHO not want to run right. I thought the battery only started the car

Can someone please tell me what this code means and how to fix it. Canister Purge 1 solenoid/circuit failure - Solenoids

Many Thanks

I might as well say it now, since I was the one who welcomed you...

I searched here for the Canister Purge failure and got this:

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=7611&highlight=565

It's a great feature that SEARCH button. Don't worry too much about the SHO, sound like you've got a low miliage, maintained car. You need to begin to verify what was done during the 60K work...like receipts for parts and service. This will give you a great base line for future work or related issues.

You not only have the best Gen SHO (IMO) but a the last year with an MTX....oh....80K ! For a 10 year old car you have a great head start and if you factor in that any repair you can pretty much do your self, or at least get the best advice for parts and labor rates it might run an average of $50/month for general repairs and maintenance.

I've owned my car since 1998 (Second owner) and yeah, I've cursed at it and thought about a new car, but man....this ones paid for and fun to drive, mod and generally talk about.

Again....welcome to SHO ownership.....like it, love it, hate it....that's our reason here.

Thanks for the info

I went to the link you gave me and found out what the canister purge/solenoid is. What it does I still dont know but the reply threads suggest that it can be bypassed and/or drilled

I found mine hanging by the hoses down below the fan next to the bottom of the motor. Guess I need to do something real soon about that.

Thanks for the tip on the search feature.

Here is somethiing that is often overlooked, also. It gave me mad headaches for a while on my 93 ATX. Check the main positive cable where it attaches to the starter. My car was doing the same exact thing, except losing power to accessories as well (only noticed it losing power a couple of times). Just an easy check, being as how you said you found loose connections on your battery.

I don't think it hanging has much to do with it. There are 2 8mm bolts holding it on.

During my clutch install, I wanted to rip that thing off the car after hitting my head on it like 4 times. PITA thing.....
