Hey guys, been fighting an issue with the left/rear cam seal leaking. Started by having a local mech. put in the pricey seals made in Japan from RCM. He thought maybe the seals were bad because they continued to leak and he can't find anything wrong with the cam. He then went with a fel-pro and that hasn't helped. We don't have a shop here in Int'l Falls to tell if the cam is bad and it has leaked since I bought it, so he is thinking that the best option is to go with a new head/cam combo. I have'nt run across any heads on the net, so I'm not sure how easy that will even be. Anybody else ever run into this? Anybody got some ideas for me? Thanks.

Is there a groove on the cam? Are you using sealant on the "metal" seals? Don't worry about it if they aren't the metal type.

I've also heard someone's bright idea of flipping the seal around backwards, so it won't ride on that groove.

Just a few things off the top of my head.

Try an OEM seal.

Mine was leaking but I replaced it by taking the cam cap off and also using a little extra gasket material aorund the edges.

Also make sure the seal is seated.

Also make sure the cam cap as enough sealant material.

We can get you a cam and or set of heads if needed.

not sure if they're using sealant or not, 99% sure they're not flipping the seal. I think he did leave the 2nd seal out a bit, but 3rd is in all the way. He's thinking maybe warped cam? My mech said initially that he had done it before. He's normally really good and isn't affraid to look to the net for help(he even does all the work on a local Porsche 928).

I start by removing the cam sensor, and its retainer, then I remove the shutter wheel. If you do not remove the shutter wheel, when installing the seal, it usually rolls a part of the seal. I cant tell you how many cars I've pulled apart that the seal is rolled. It's only that one, too. Then going back together (with an OE seal) I use the cam sensor retainer to push the seal in. I tighten the bolts evenly until it is tight.

It happens to the best of us...

And if you find a set of engine tools that still has the little plastic ramp seal installer, that almost guarantees that the seal goes in correctly.

It looks a little like the flare at the end of a trumpet - the tube is tapered to allow the inner diameter of the seal to slide up the ramp to expand. The end of the tube is very thin and fits over the end of the camshaft, so the seal just slides up and on.

I think using the right tool for the job makes the most sense. I'm working all weekend, traveling during the week, and working again next weekend so it'll be a couple weeks until I can tear this thing down. I'll pm LoudSHO92 about a rental as soon as I can get to it. Have the angle head drill now and a shop manual but you guys explain it wayyy more clearly. Thanks again.
