I'm gonna be replacing my passenger side CV axle tomorrow and I'm wondering if I'll be needing to rent a slide hammer to get it out or if I'll need anything other than the appropriate sockets, wrenches, and a long piece of metal to separate the balljoint from the knuckle.

You should be able to pull it out of the transmission by hand, especially if you have a replacement. A jack handle should do fine to lower the control arm.

You don't need a slide hammer. You can tap the axle out of the intermediate shaft with a chunk of wood/brass and a hammer, and use a puller, hammer with brass/wood, or air hammer with a pointy tip to push the axle out of the hub.

Replace "transmission" with "intermediate shaft". You should be able to pull it out by hand or with firebat45's method.
