I've never experienced this first-hand but I've read people with similar problems have had to replace the Brake On/Off switch (aka BOO).

Also, if this switch is bad, your brake lights would not illuminate. Do they when you step on the pedal? If not, this may be a clue as to the problem.

Good luck.

Turn the ignition key part way between "lock" and "run". The shifter will then come out of Park without having to push on the brake pedal. I assume the car is parked on flat ground. If parked on a hill the car may have rolled against the parking pin making shifting almost impossible.

Bad brake light switch. cheap to buy and easy to instal. Try giving it a bit of a wiggle to move it around a bit. Hopefully you will have jostled it enough to get the car started. The drive to a Ford dealership and buy a new one.

If you have real issues, you can run a jumper wire between teh 2 wires to start your car. keep in mind that you probably don't have brake lights though.

thanks for all the replies!

i got the car into gear using markus's tip...

my brake lights are not working and fuse #1 is blown. the manual says that this fuse also is for the turn signals, but they work (?).

anyway. i guess all i need to do is replace the switch...

Try just replacing the fuse first, that may take care of your problem!

the #1 fuse blows as soon as i put a new one in. i replaced the brake switch. still the same thing, fuse blown right off the bat.

could it be the shifter's solenoid (the makes the stop pin lock it in park) be bad, causing it to blow the fuse? obviously its still going on and off correctly - because the shifter is still locked in place, and is released if i do the key trick.

any other ideas? i'm clueless.

on a possibly unrelated note: my cruise control has never worked since i bought the car 9 months ago. fuse #1 has "speed control" (is this the cruise control?) as one of its functions listed in the manual. could this have something to do with all of this??

thanks for all your help!

anyone else have any suggestions?
GOT THE FIX!!!! Pulled this off from this site using search...... Thanks goes to my wife for her introduction to the search feature of this site and SHOgirl94 who posted the solution.

Since you mentioned cruise control, and after reading the post below, I put one and one together..... Disconnect cruise control. The connector is located next to the throttle body/gear. I followed the vacuum tube from the throttle gear to the closest connector/electronic part. Just unplug connector, then replace #1 fuse (the one that kept blowing!!! ) ... problem solved. My guess is you can replace the CC module later.....

OK, replaced the switch under the brake pedal which is probably what you're talking about, SHO SPD. Didn't do anything. Got to looking around under the hood and saw that someone had plugged the old cruise control module wiring harness back in. Now, I DID NOT do this! Something leads me to believe that the husband did it cause he went and told my dad that it was broken and he didn't have the money to pay to have it towed or anything. I think he was just wanting money, but whatever, the SHO is running fine now and he's long gone!
