auto lamps

i dont know a wholel ot about the auto lamp system, but I can't leave the switch on or the headlights will come on every time it gets dark regardless if i'm driving the car or if it is just sitting in a parking lot. is this how they are supposed to work? or are they only supposed to work when the key is on? its kind of anoyying really. why bother have it if you just have to turn the switch on and off every time

There must be a bad relay on the power up part of it thats stuck on. You should be able to set the timer and never touch the headlight switch. They should only come on when the car is on and will remain on after you shut down for a few seconds to a few mins depending on where you have dial set.

where is the relay located?

The relay is located behind the center of the instrument panel on the instrument panel brace. I thank that it is just above gas pedal. What i would do before you go looking for the relay is turn the car on shut off anything that makes a noise and then turn the auto lamp switch on and if you hear a click sound from under the dash them the relay is fine.

Also were do you live in Minnesota, any where close to Trempealeau or Lacrosse WI.

I'll go check that in a bit. Actually I'm currently living in Osceola, WI just on the border its about 150 miles from Trempealeau
