What do the speaker grilles say on the front doors? You may have a "premium sound" unit with no sub, in which case there would not be a sub or amp back there. Or, there could be a JBL system in there in which case the sub amp needs to be there to tie the system together I believe. It's been years since I saw a '92, so someone else needs to chime in here... But I do know that when I used either the factory sub integration harnes or the amp bypass harnesses, I never had an issue as long as I had the correct ones. Either Best Buy has them, or Wally World usually had them, most of the time in stock...

Honestly- your best bet is to just rewire the stereo. If you get an aftermarket deck, you can just run new speaker wire to the doors and the back deck. It'll be a LOT easier, and the factory wiring is brittle and your new wiring would be rated for the bump in power too. I rewired my '93 and it wasn't bad at all. Problem is, the JBL system is all integrated. If you remove a piece, you need to replace it to get it all to run together. There is a plug in there that bypasses the factory amp, but I don't know if it will bypass the sub amp too. All you have to do is get a roll of speaker wire and run it to the doors and package tray in the rear, that's what I would do.
