I want to add a temp gauge for my ATX. Where to install it? Is there an existing port? Do I need to weld a port onto my oil pan? Is there a location on the case that I can drill & tap for the sender?

I'm gonna change the ATF in the next week or so. I will make a port at that time if I can't find an existing one.

Rather than breech the transmission pan and create another leakage hazard, why don't you just insert a tap in the line to the radiator cooler? The fluid temp isn't going to drop more than a couple of degrees on the way through the engine compartment.

What year did Ford start installing the auxillary transmission cooler in front of the A/C condensor? Adam Parrott (Axianator) had brought a B&M cooler for me to install for him on his 1995 ATX, but we found that there was already a Ford cooler where we were going to place it. The aux cooler is in series downstream of the cooler in the radiator end tank.

Scott, my reasarch has led me to believe that they began the extra cooler in 94 along with all the other improvements that the 93s didn't have...DANG did I buy the wrong year sho...

I've got a tranny temp gauge. I removed the oil pan and installed one of those drain plug kits you get at any parts store. You drill a hole in the pan and bolt the bung in with a supplied gasket. Rather than putting the plug in the bung, I threaded in the temp sender. Now I have both a plug and a temp gauge. When I need to drain the oil I just pull the sender out.

Not sure about the tranny oil cooler starting in 94 as my 93 has one.....Maybe overkill but my bro and I added a additional 28,000gvw cooler from summit on it last month also....need to let it warm up more than normal probably but just like the idea of the added insurance.

I've heard of people having problems installing additional tranny coolers on their ATX SHO's. FWIW, my '93 already has one (don't know why somebody thinks it was '94).

It seems some tranny coolers operate all the time, which keeps the tranny fluid from ever reaching proper operating temps, and keeping the TC from ever locking up. I don't know if this in itself it any problem, just something people have reported after installation.

DaySHO, does your TC still lock up? If so, does it take a really long time? Just curious.

I believe there are some coolers that only activate (start cooling) once the fluid reaches a certain temperature. I'm not sure if the B&M is like that. If so, maybe I'll look into buying one!

Later.

Steve,
You are correct, but I live in the south in west texas so I don't have to worry about the underheating issue believe me. I was more worried about boiling the tranny fluid again for the 4th time, but yes that is something to consider when getting a cooler. How hot is your climate and will you have a problem getting the tranny case up to operating temperature. I don't have that problem since the sho is a summer car only, and I live in a climate that is over 75 degrees most of the year.

All of the ATX's have the tranny cooler built into the radiator. I believe in 1994 they also added additional tubing in front of the radiator and the condensor (as Scott said). There is a valve that bypasses the additional cooler until the transmission gets into operating temperature to avoid overcooling.

On my 93 ATX, I brazed a 1/8" pipe fitting into the pan for the sender. You can also use it as a drain plug by removing the sender. My 93 also came with the additional cooler.
