I found a new automatic transmission and with help from some local SHO owners, we are going to do the tranny swap ourselves.

I did a search both here and on the SHO Times web site and cannot find definitive instructions on how to change out an ATX. I've got the Helm's manual, but was wondering if there are any additional instructions that would aid in performing an ATX swap-out?

Also while I'm doing the swap what parts/seals would be good to change out. There's no rush in getting this done, so I can take all the time I need to gather up parts and instructions.

Thanks

Two tips I can add would be to rent a real tranny jack, and try to get the highest jackstands you can find.

This would be a good time to replace the rear main seal, and you should examine the flexplate to see if the ring gear is in good shape and hasn't been chewed up by the starter over the years. A new aftermarket flexplate is about $40.

You'll also want to inspect your CV boots and replace the halfshafts if they're making any noise.

Good luck!

While you are at it have a rear main seal ready in case yours is leaking, if you feel tranny sauvy install a transgo kit, and finaly change the VSS while the tranny is out. The VSS is a weak link in tranny performance. The Vehicle Speed Sensor is only about 20 bucks.

Okay, we're really going to start on the ATX replacement this weekend. I've got the rebuilt Ford ATX, rebuilt half-shafts from AutoZone, a new VSS, and a new rear main seal.

I also plan on replacing the Y-pipe and Cat-back. We're going to take a lot of pictures and try and assemble a step-by step guide for an ATX replacement.

Can you guys think of anything else I should have staged before-hand to do an ATX replacement and an exhaust replacement??

Sub-frame bushings, ball joints, tie rods, struts, motor/tranny mounts, suspension bushings are all easier to replace while the tranny is out.
