So after some searching...I've learned a tiny little bit.

1) I am not mechanically inclined enough to rebuild an ATX, unless I had an unlimited amount of time, a nice area to do it, and some really, really good instructions. I'm pretty sure it requires special tools, so the DIY option is basically out of the question.
2) A quality rebuilt transmission is at least 1500 bucks.
3) Putting a used, non-rebuilt AX4s into a car is basically a bad idea.
4) The transmission atx aftermarket basically consists of one transgo shift kit and a tweecer tune.

My trans is slipping at the top of 2nd, it's pretty not cool. If I'm going to have to shell out 2 grand to rebuild this thing I'd be better off buying a decent MTX car and using my ATX car for parts/selling it, no joke. A gen1 MTX has more performance potential anyway. I've only had my ATx for a few days, and it was really starting to grow on me, but I can't justify putting a 2k trans into a 600 dollar car with a salvaged title. Ideas?

I have heard that Sho Source has a atx transmission that is high performance. If they don't have it now- it's on the way. I'm with you though as finding a mtx in good shape to replace it. They are out there. Watch craigs list in California, Nevada and Arizona. I have purchased 2 in the last 6 months for cheap. 94 mtxs, both had no rust, bodies/paint in good shape. They need the typical things done to them. Waterpump- top end etc. We drove one back and trailered the other but it could have been driven. 1k for the car with 120k and 800 for the one with 102k ( this one was a steal) If your interior is in good shape in the car you have, it's always nice to find one that has the same color. Good luck

I have always had manual transmission SHO's and to be honest, they are not exactly trouble free either. Whatever you buy will need a clutch and TOB, usually within a year, and there is grief involved in that transaction as well.
Forget that the car is not a high dollar reseller. Try duplicating it in another form and see how much you pay.
Fix the automatic or go for the super reman from Shosource. Go to a place that knows these cars, it will be cheaper and better than the national chain.
Then do all the tricks that help the automatic live longer. I think the SHO's are a great car in automatic form and daily driving can be more fun when you surprise people with a no-fuss launch.

How tough is it to swap an ATX if I get a buddy to help me? That seems like a fair deal, little downtime, etc. If I keep the car I'll be going that route.

Ive only done an MTX but with the help of a friend in a driveway we did it in a day. The ATX is a bit heavier but it can be done I believe.

There not that bad!....I heard you can swap them out without taking the motor out!...But taking the motor isn't that bad either!....If you know how to take them out that is!......You will save a lot of money if you take it out yourself!....Half the money is taking it out and putting it back in!... There not that bad, just don't have a lot of room to work with is all!...good luck
