fordracing95,

A quality rebuild kit for an auto trans will be aproximately $400. If you get a Motorcraft kit from a dealership parts department, and do not get any discount, it could be double that. If your local parts store is good about discounts to non-professionals it could be a little less.

Check some of the Ford parts "on-line" places that advertise discount prices. Some really do have good prices. Check Rock-auto.com also.

Get a full rebuild kit, not just a gaskets and seals kit. You want new friction disks and plates as well as seals and gaskets.

You may find a broken spring, or snap ring once you get inside, that will not be part of the kit. None of the valve body springs are part of the kit, but unless you find one broken that should not matter. If you take the valve body apart DO NOT get the springs mixed up, or other parts for that matter.

The two other parts that are not part of the rebuild kit are the pump and the torque converter. It may be a good idea to have the torque converter rebalanced and/or rebuilt.

I would get new bolts and washers for the pump-to-case attachment. The washers are brass and compress upon being torqued. They are a seal, but are not usually part of the kit.

If you have access to an auto trans rebuilder, that has Ford experience, it would be a good idea to talk to him/her to get ideas about "best proceedures" and things to watch out for.

If I remember right the 94 was a problem year. Maybe the trans can be upgraded to the 95 standards.

Keep the parts in order and label everthing. There are spacers and washers that are critical for maintaining clearances, another reason for taking notes and making labels. In fact measure your "end play" before you take the trans apart.

Planetary gears, differential, and bearings are usually OK unless the trans has been hammered.

Check for upgrades to the trans computer. Replace it, or see if a dealership can "download" the upgrade into your trans computer. Make sure you have a good reference manual.

Do your homework before you start the rebuild. If I think of anything else that will help I'll post it. rangerj

A regular rebuild is probably fine...my original tranny lasted 150k miles. Therefore, a rebuild should last long, also.

However, if you have plans to abuse the tranny, or you simply want it to last next to forever, then you should call Doug Lewis at FPS. I understand he sells his plans for a minimal amount regarding his rebuild, which, by all accounts, is superb.

I only recently found this out...of course, that's AFTER I rebuilt mine!

Just to clarify...Doug sells the PLANS for the tranny rebuild, which I would guess as being a few hundred bucks...

You're probably right about your tranny...good luck in the rebuild!
