I am looking to buy an old/blown ATX tranny as a project rebuild as I know it is only a matter of time before I need to replace mine. However, When I did my tranny flush I found out that there were a couple diffrent ATX's that were used in 93. One has an odd shaped pan (mine) and one with an almost square pan. Do these make any diffrence?

When I start scouting for my rebuild I really don't want to pick up the wrong core.

Thanks all, Jason

You have an AX4S. It will ( in most cases ) Say AX4S SHO on the bottom of the pan.

All V6 ATX trannys will say "AXOD SHO" on the pan, and have "SHO" cast in the top of the bellhousing (under the data plate). Any other tranny isn't a SHO tranny.

AXOD... Yea, that is what I ment. AX4S did not look right. BUt that is what the transmission is.

I know it is an AXOD-SHO but are there two diffrent pans? Mine is the odd shaped one. Does anyone have the square shaped pan with an AXOD-SHO?

That is what I am trying to find.

Thanks all

I doubt it. All ATX cases from 93-95 are externally the same so I would assume they use the same oil pan. I think even SLOs use the same oil pan, only difference being they say "AXOD METRIC" but I could be wrong.

All SHO tranny pans, in fact all AXOD series tranny pans, are shaped somewhat like the state of Florida. There were minor changes over the years to the bolt patterns and number of bolts, but the basic shape is about the same. None have ever had a square pan. Now, the valve body cover is sort of square, but is on the side of the tranny and would be hard to confuse with the pan. Non-SHO AXOD series pans are shallower than the SHO pans, but are the same basic shape.

Thanks guys, According to Ford, there were some SHO's produced with a square shaped tranny pan. But at least I know most of them are the "L" shaped ones. Now I have to find a cheap core to start my rebuild.

Thanks, Jason
